nandamai has reviewed a couple of season 8 episodes recently, and it's got me reminiscing. The first Stargate episode I watched was 'Full Alert', which was... a really weird one to start on. For a start, it's 95% gibberish without a working knowledge of Stargate history (NID? The Trust? Goa'uld? Al'kesh? Prometheus? Symbiote poison? Ancient outposts? Snakes? ...wtf?). It's not a typical episode, either - mostly set on Earth, lots of political shenanigans, everyone except Daniel spend most of the episode making phonecalls and looking at computers. Sam and Teal'c have so little to do that I didn't realise they were main characters. And there's a very abrupt ending... Still, somehow I found it intriguing. I liked Jack from the start - casually threatening Kinsey when he breaks into Jack's house and drinks Jack's scotch...
Kinsey: "Who are you calling?"
Jack: "Local sheriff’s a friend of mine."
Kinsey: "I may be disgraced, but I’m not wanted for any crimes."
Jack: "Breaking and entering?"
Kinsey: "Jack..."
Jack: "Shh. It’s ringing."
Then Kinsey disconnects the landline, Jack gives him a long, cool look, calmly gets out his cellphone, and I fell in like.
It was the show's underlying sense of humour that caught my interest (I don't like my sci-fi to be entirely serious). For instance, the scene when Teal'c and Carter are sent off on big, important assignments, and Daniel is left sitting at the briefing room table, with Jack ignoring him, and apparently nothing to do... "I have to pick up my dry cleaning." Hee.
I was prepared for a steep plot-learning curve - after all, I'd done the X-Files thing, and the Buffy thing. I didn't watch any more of the series that was on TV - I'd found out that it was quite far along in the show's run. But it stayed in my mind. A few weeks later, and my boyfriend (with whom I live) was away for a couple of weeks. I had nothing much to do in the evenings (social life? What social life?), so I did some research and decided that the 4th season seemed like a good place to start. I didn't want to start from the 1st season - they're usually a bit iffy - and there was this Sam/Jack shippy thing that intrigued me... I bought the DVDs, stayed up all night, serveral nights in a row, watching it, and by the end of the two weeks I was an addict, and had ordered the 3rd and 7th seasons. Watching it in order? For sissies.
That was exactly a year ago - January '06. Since then I've seen watched seasons 1-8 (I don't have cable and live in the UK), read about seasons 9 and 10, written a bunch of fanfics, and generally leapt feet-first into the Stargate fandom world.
I'm sure this'll have been asked before, but anyone else out there care to share their memories of the first Stargate they watched? Or the first one that got them hooked? What first attracted you to the show? If you're a shipper, how quickly did you latch on to your pairing of choice?

So today I be mostly thinking about lazy fic. You know those 'Getting to know you' emails that go around? I saw one on a livejournal recently, and it reminded me of a Wolverine/Rogue sorta-fic I read once (not meaning to insult it - I really enjoyed it - I say 'sorta-fic' because there wasn't a plot as such). Getting To Know You.
Anyhow, I thought I'd try it as an exercise / bit of fun for the Stargate characters. Initiated by Janet, and including questions such as 'Do you sleep with stuffed toys?', 'Scary movies or happy endings?' and 'Have you ever been convicted of a crime?'. I've given myself a list of characters including the usual (SG-1), plus more minor characters that I like / find interesting, such as Felger, Dr. Lee, Siler, Walter, Paul Davis, Nyan... I don't think Jack, for one, would actually answer such a questionnaire, but hey. It's fun. So far I've written most of Janet's, all of Jack's, and bits of Sam's and Daniel's, and one or two answers from Hammond and Teal'c. Although if anyone else wants a go...?

See, being an old-fashioned sort of guy, and one who's spent most of his adult life travelling with the army, I imagined Jack might write letters. We've seen him do it, too, at least once that I can remember – the letter to Hammond, where he almost resigned. He was a lot more open and honest in that letter than he ever usually is out loud.
Each letter is fairly short, so I figure I could just about manage one per episode.. I've written some, scattered over the first three seasons, and now I'm trying to fill in the gaps. I'm not gonna write Jack's letters. What he's written should be reflected by his mom's reactions.
Oh heck. I just want to know if it's dead boring or not. This is the letter for 'Brief Candle':

Dear Jonathan,
Well, in answer to your (rather strange and somewhat morbid) question, people on my side of the family have generally been fairly long-lived. You know all about your grandfather, of course. When he finally passed on, it was such an event that it was reported in the local paper, did you know that? The Petersons are a healthy lot, with all their own teeth and hair right up until the end. As for the O'Neill's, your father isn't so sure of the details. There isn't any history of disease that he can remember (of course, your aunt did die of cancer a few years ago, but she was quite a heavy smoker in her day – thank goodness you gave them up – such a disgusting habit). However, the O'Neill's do have a history of... interesting demises. Talk to your father about it sometime, he has quite some anecdotes. They've always been good at finding exciting trouble. Ask him about his Uncle Albert and the pear tree. Please keep yourself safe, Jonathan – I don't want to see you included in their numbers.
What brought on these thoughts of old age? Or can't I ask? Honestly, darling, could someone not have come up with a better cover story than 'deep space radar telemetry'? If I hear that lie from you once more, you'll find that you're never too old to be put across your mother's knee, "Bird" Colonel or not! If you can't tell me what you are doing, I will accept that... ungraciously, perhaps (who do they think I might tell? The local sewing circle?), but I'll accept it. But I do not wish to be told lies.
Whatever it is, I believe that it's dangerous. Well, either that, or so boring that it's got you thinking about your old age. Don't worry, darling, that's still a long way off – you're still a little boy to me! But then, perhaps you always will be. A mother's prerogative.
Tell me more about this team of yours, if you can. I'm always interested in the people in your life, and the little tidbits of information about them that you've been dropping into your letters have piqued my interest. They don't sound like your usual collection of – what's that word? 'Grunts'? Such a descriptive term! I'm finding it very hard to picture you leading a team with scientists as a permanent fixture. Of course, that is probably my fault, but as Head of English I feel it's my responsibility – no, my *duty* - to be constantly at war with the Science department. I hope I haven't colored your view of scientists and science, though. I'm sure there are some very likeable scientists out there... somewhere. Perhaps you have found some. I hope so.
