I've finished season 6 of MacGyver! It finished on kind of a low note, but no matter, because I have fic.

Trail of Tears )

From 'makes no sense' to 'oh holy crap that makes SO MUCH SENSE': I have a fic rec: Reverb, by [personal profile] lolmac. How do I love it? Let me count the ways.

Let me count the ways behind this cut tag. )

---

While I was in the mood for epic fic, I also read [personal profile] rydra_wong's Walked Right Out Of The Machinery (Stargate SG-1 season 6 AU. The one where Ba'al's Jaffa got there thirty seconds faster), and I would rec it except that I'm probably the last person to read it. OMG SO GOOD. Lives up to everything that everyone said about it. It... I have no words. Probably the best depiction of someone slowly, painfully clawing their way back to some kind of equilibrium after horrendous trauma, while also dealing with some big changes in their life, that I've ever read. Oh Jack.

Fic rec: a lovely Jack/Sara fic, Metaphors for the Void by [personal profile] abyssinia, full of the subtext of an old relationship that never quite ended. Abyssis writes Sara so well, she feels like a real person - and for that matter, kudos to the actress who played Sara so convincingly that I can never quite believe she was in just that one episode.

It's a timestamp sequel to A Still, Small Voice, although it's not essential that you read that, first. But you should, 'cause it's good, too.

*is now jonesing for more Jack/Sara fic*

ETA, and completely irrelevant to the above: what do Americans call a park keeper? That is, in the sort of park where you go and eat your lunch, and there's grass and a playground for the kids, what's the title of the person who wanders around and keeps an eye on things, maybe does the maintenance, gets called first if there's a dog on the loose or someone's breaking the by-laws - that sort of thing. I did a search for 'park keeper', which is what I'd call them, but mostly came up with English sites, so I suspect that's not a common American usage.

(If it's more locality-specific, what might someone in Colorado call a park keeper?)

I'm going to stalk [livejournal.com profile] syxp fic through your journal, [livejournal.com profile] annerbhp. Just to warn you. Because it's quite possible that no one else has spotted this response to [livejournal.com profile] nandamai's icon/fic request, yet. Either that, or [livejournal.com profile] syxp has killed everyone ded of laughter.

For people who like Jack/Sara but who might not have read something by an author who usually writes Jack/Sam, a recommendation:

Rush, by Jojo. Jack, Sara, and Charlie. Sweetly melancholic. Fits with my autumnal mood today.

ETA: Also, Fig, a Sam and Jack friendship fic rec for you: Tuneless In The Dark, also by Jojo. (Yes, I'm not getting any work done today. *g* But there is nooooooothing to do.)

Quick rec - following the discussion of Show And Tell on [profile] redial_the_gate (and the more I think about that ep, the more it becomes one of my absolute favourites), [profile] redbyrd_sgfic has written an episode tag that answers most of my questions: Picking Up The Pieces (PG, gen). Meta and fic in one neat little package, excellent!

Flying post. I've been busy of late, and am likely to be busy for the next couple of weeks (I'll explain later - lots of rl stuff), but I am lurking, and trying to keep up with the responsibility of modliness for [profile] redial_the_gate(have I mentioned how excited I am about this? I have? Well, consider it mentioned again).

Which reminds me to remind you: don't forget to watch the Stargate movie in preparation for the initial post on Tuesday 24th July. Think of it as homework.

Or... not.

And, some picspam. A running theme, it seems:

Name three fics you think I will never, ever, ever write. In return, I will attempt to write a snippet of one of them. (Assuming, you know, that I have some idea what the fandom is, etc.)

Do your worst! :-)

Me, procrastinating on my Sam/Daniel fic? Naaaaaaaaaaaaah.

Actually, I've written 500+ words on it today, so I'm feeling productive. Although I'd feel more productive if I could work out What Happens Next. If I get it finished by this weekend, is anyone up for a quick beta? I don't think it'll be much more than 1,500 words when finished.

Okay, I shall confess, I was a tiny bit naughty - but there are extenuating circumstances. See, I went to post my

[community profile] remix_redux story, and when I logged in, the first story - at the top of the page, no scrolling - was the remix of mine - Hard Candy Shell, a remix of Peanut M&Ms And The Twinkle In Her Eye. I wouldn't have scrolled, and I wouldn't have searched - but it was right there.

And I can resist everything but temptation.

I posted about it when I read it, but then I took the post down again, because I'm indecisive like that. But to show my wonderful, wonderful, wonderful remixer what my initial - practically incoherent - response was, this was the post:

> IT'S SO GOOD!
>
> I'm in love!
>
> *does a happy dance*
>
> It's the bestest ever! Whoever it was got the tone just right, and it felt like my story, but different, and it was just SO GOOD I HAVE TO WRITE IN ALLCAPS! And the ending just about froze my heart!
>
> I swear, I'm shaking. The thrill, my loves, the thrill...

And, re-reading it (as I have a time or... twenty...), I have to say that my reaction is still pretty much the same. *g* I can't find enough words to praise it.

There's a wonderful feel of the spaces in between what was written - the implied, left unsaid... remembering a term from art class, the negative space. Not that what they've written isn't fabulous - it's so very, very good - but the way they've created the shape of what's not there is just lovely, and completely heartbreaking. They completely got what I was trying to do in my story - and they've done it better. *g*

The last section still kills me. And the two glasses... and the last line... *goes incoherent again*

So, all in all, I'm pretty happy - can you tell?

Also, my remixee liked their story, and I'm so very relieved - I was very unsure about it, and about how they'd feel about me remixing a drabble (because our fandoms don't overlap much), so I'm very pleased. *wipes brow*

Also, I've totally guessed who wrote mine (unless someone's been super subtle at misdirecting with the formatting). How bad form is it to thank them properly? Or should I stay schtum until the unveiling?

Apparently more of my RL people read this than I thought. That's a weird thought... Intellectually, I know that I've given this address to several people, and they're welcome to come and read up on me anytime. It's mostly Stargate stuff anyhow, which is probably OMG boring to them. Heh.

So, in the spirit of connecting with my RL friends... *waves* HAPPY BIRTHDAY FOR YESTERDAY, VICK! Hope the ankle (and the hangover, huh?) gets better soon. Good luck with the job stuff. I feel your pain. Have you looked on gumtree? I've not tried it myself (yet), but I've heard it's useful.

Oh, and in totally unrelated news, I completely love this new story by [profile] kellifer_fic: By The Light Of The Silvery Moon. It's Willow and Oz, set a few years in the future, and it's just perfect. I haven't watched Buffy for aaaages, but this really reminded me of everything I loved about the series, and about the two of them. It's funny, and wistful, and sad, and angsty, and it feels like there's a huge amount of history and plot, just beneath the surface, and she's got Willow and Oz pitch-perfect (“Now fate is just showing off,” hehehehehe), and... it's Willow and Oz!

I am not going to look for more Willow/Oz fanfic, I am not going to look for more Willow/Oz fanfic, I am not going to look for more Willow/Oz fanfic, I am not going to look for more Willow/Oz fanfic, I am not going to look for more Willow/Oz fanfic, I am not going to look for more Willow/Oz fanfic, I am not going to look for more Willow/Oz fanfic...

I had a thought (it happens sometimes): the reel that's shown at every SGC Christmas party, and which is mentioned in fanon many times. We should write this. By 'we', I mean I don't want to do it on my own I have three so far, but they're mostly just silly pratfalls -I'm sure there must be people out there with much funnier ideas. And they're delightfully snack-sized. Go on, just the one...

Oh, and it sort of fits with the fact that it's April Fool's Day this coming Sunday, too.

So here are mine, to start. If you'd like to join in, you're welcome to post it as comment fic (because that would be love), or on your own lj (please let me know so I can read it, though!). Or this could all be collected... somewhere... I dunno, I haven't thought it through that clearly.

Eesh. This is why I never volunteer to be a mod. I'm not cut out for organisation.

Reasons Why I Love My Fandom #5736:

The show is coming to a close, and how has SG-1 fandom (on lj, that is - I read not the brainspam of GW) responded? Has there been a wailing and a gnashing of teeth? Well, uh, a little, but mostly what I've been finding on my flist of late is humour. You guys are the funniest! I hug you all. Have you all got a touch of Spring Fever? I think so.

For anyone who's not seen 'em (those who've been on trips to Mars to spot the little green men who write friendship fic, perhaps), here are a tiny selection of choice cuts of funny, grabbed from a quick troll through my flist (and gathered together mainly for my own convenience - I'm going back and re-reading these, oh yes). Oh, and the first link may well be funny to fans of Harry Potter, Supernatural, and SGA, too. Or anyone who likes to laugh and point at teh crazy fanz:

Never let it be said that I missed a convenient bandwagon as it passed...

Sometimes it's ok to pimp yourself out. Post a list of your top five favorite fics you've written, regardless of fandom or the reason you love them. This isn't about the BEST things you've written, but what you LOVE most. Then tag five other people to do the same.

In no particular order:

Pirating 101: Because I laughed so much when writing it. There's no plot whatsoever, and no description, either – just dialogue – but I just had such fun coming up with all the pirate-speak. The pirate names in particular. *g*

Out Go The Lights: I was just really, really pleased with the balance of this one. It starts of fairly fluffy, then there's some angst, then a bit more angst... and then a happy ending. It's the kind of fic that's my favourite to read. And also I set out to write kissing without just fading out (my usual trick), and felt it went okay – not too much like there were diagrams involved.

Prolix: This is an X-Men, Wolverine/Rogue fic. Basically, in it I stated my case for the pairing, and why (and how) they should end up together. I think at the time there was a rumour going around that Bryan Singer had asked our W/R Yahoo group to explain exactly why we thought they should get together. Delusional insanity, I realise that now, but it set me thinking.

Sensitive: Another X-Men, Wolverine/Rogue fic, and another where I felt I'd got the humour and angst balanced to my satisfaction. I love writing Wolverine's mental dialogue – he amuses me no end. I loved writing his creative way of swearing.

Safe And Sound: Back to Stargate again. I could completely visualise every moment of their time in the escape pod, and I think that comes across. And it's all about Sam's protective streak coming out when the Colonel's injured / in trouble. My fic way of giving him a big cuddle, after Abyss. So there I was, writing a big cuddle, visualising it clearly... *g*

None of these are perfect, they all have the odd bit that I feel I could have done better – but they've all also got bits that I felt I couldn't have done better. Which I why I chose them.

Interesting to me is that almost none of these have any plot to speak of. That bothers me in a way, but not completely. I do feel that action isn't terribly important, in and of itself – it's the effects of action that I'm interested in reading / writing about - the emotional impact on the characters – how they react, how they interact with one another...

But sometimes I would actually like to come up with a story with actual plot, simply because the more in-depth a plot, the more you can explore things about the worlds inside the characters' heads. Maybe someday I'll work on something longer and more satisfying. (Get your minds out of the gutter – I'm talking about fic!)

Okay, anyone who knows me knows this - I love fanfiction. But for those not involved in the fanfic world, I often get baffled looks and incomprehension - same sort of looks I sometimes get for being vegetarian, actually. So I thought I'd explain some of it, to see if it makes sense (in my own head, as well as to other people).

Made more icons, because really, who needs sleep? Will post them to my web page... sometime. Wow, I spend too much time doing this.

We had a fire alarm drill at work this morning, badly timed for me 'cause I'd just gone to the canteen, and was making toast. So I had to go stand outside in the cold with just my phone and my small change to keep me warm. Brrrrr. And then go back to yates. At least the toast didn't set the kitchen on fire whilst we were out doing the drill. Although that would have been funny.

Been talking to

[profile] jewelsdelphina recently about fanfic, and thought I'd put some of my personal recommendations for Sam/Jack Stargate fic on here. So here's some - these are just my particular favourites of these authors' stories, it's worth looking at everything else these guys have written, too, if you have time. And I've only listed the one available on ff.net for now - will go through my list of favourites from other sites at some point, too:

AerynSG1Trigger, Of Pleasure Palaces And Stupid Hats, The Gift.

Annerb: The Regs, Exodus, Egeria's Legacy (in progress), String Theory (in progress), and Space Pirates: Way Cooler Than Ninjas.

AnnunakiA Case Of Need.

dietcokechicThe Barista series, and The Assistant series (in progress).

Jojo6The Truth Room, Acquiescent, Macaroni And Cheese, Bless The Regs, Bright Ideas, Whoops, Overwhelming Coolness, Chairs And Resting Places...

KissHerJack (a.k.a. Gail Delaney): Who They Are, Twilight, Hand In The Cookie Jar, and the Moments series.

Lunar1Not Mad.

Michelle VMiscommunication, Duck Soup.

Rachel500A Pond With No Fish, Aftershocks.

SGCbearcubBanshee, Monkey Screaming.

I'm learning lots of new words (new to me, anyhow). Wo ai ni de pi gu (phonetic Chinese), from urbandictionary.com  - means "I like your ass." I like to think I'll end up speaking like a combination of 'Firefly' and 'Black Books'.

Shiny.

I think I need to Photoshop this picture so it no longer looks like Jack's got something up his nose. It's just a badly-placed speck of light on the glass he's looking through.

edit: Currently reading 'The Furies' by Abby Eddey, from Heliopolis - Sam fighting for her world and her General - go Sam! Lots of Jack-whumping, death, destruction, trekking through the wilderness, upcoming battles, apocalypse, that sort of thing - NSFW - but I'm sure there's a happy ending because, er, I checked. Hey, I wanted to make sure it was finished before I started reading - it's something like 62,000 words long. That's a novel. How does she write that much? How???

edit 2: Anyone know what 'CFB' stands for? Used in the above story, in the below context. I get the gist, and can make an intelligent guess, but I'm just curious. I don't think it's Come F**k me Boots, Canadian Forces Base, or Circulating Fluidizing Bed:

"People," Carter spoke quietly as she stepped in front of the table, "I want this understood, C ... F ... B. I am done running. I am taking you home. We are not retreating. We are not pulling back. We are not running away. Starting today -- we are taking back our home from this enemy. I am bringing this battle to Earth. We start here ... We start today."
