pepper: Pepperpot (Pepperpot)
I managed to make The Bread That Ate Manhattan this evening. I followed the recipe and everything. I think maybe I left it to rise too long. Still, it'll be lighter that way, which is probably a good thing for wholemeal walnut bread.

The recipe picture looks like this:

But the RL finished product looks like this - with, for comparison, my hand (did I ever tell you about the time I was a hand model? My life sounds so much more interesting in brief soundbites):

Photobucket

I should just look at it from the side. It looks relatively normal from the side:

A thinks I'm funny.

Mmm, walnut bread...

ETA: In case anyone's interested, the recipe. Is v. nice, but they're not kidding when they say "Makes 1 large loaf".

Mmmmm.... It is lovely. I think the recipe picture is all LIES. If it was that tiny, it would be dense somewhat like a neutron star.

LOL!!! I've made the odd neutron star in my time. Bread making is all about the feel of the dough.

Oh, yes, I've made that sort of bread, too. I'm just pleased this is edible - appearances are secondary in my cooking. :)

Shoot, I think it looks *very* edible.

If it weren't for the walnuts. :-) (Not a fan of walnuts... pecans would be good. ;-)

did the recipe picture...make several loaves from one recipe?

Hey, it looks yummy at least! That's what matters.

Well, it said it was supposed to be one loaf. I was a little dubious about the quantity (it's about the same quantity I'd usually use to make two loaves), but it was from the flour manufacturer's own site, so I figured they should know. Hah.

But it is nice. *g*

I've been on a breadmaking kick lately, and after a while, just ordinary bread has got a little boring. I wonder what I should try next...

It looks fabulous!

Must be something about the weekend. I baked my honey wheat bread and it did the same thing. Both loaves totally overflowed the pans! It won't fit in the bread slicer thing now!

But it is quite nice as I'm sure your bread is too. I'll bet it's heavenly!

Heh - it's a nice thing to do in January, I think - wholesome, and comforting, and economical, and such. Honey wheat bread sounds lovely.

Oh, that's wonderful! I'm so jealous! I used to bake; I baked virtually all the bread we ate for several years, but then we had Small Child, and I hardly ever bake anymore. (We also moved to Florida, and baking bread is Not Good when it's 90°. Having AC doesn't help, because it will just take vastly more power, and the kitchen will still be hot.)

That is a beautiful loaf, seriously.

Yeah - baking bread takes a heck of a lot of time, doesn't it? I have to plan half my day around it. I could always get a breadmaker, but... it would take all the fun and ceremony out of it.

The fact that it heats my entire kitchen is a definite benefit in winter, but I can see how it wouldn't be so great in the Florida heat. *g*

Now I just wish that I could bake bread. Cookies? Sure. Cakes? No problem. Bread? Do we really need more ammunition with which to kill Goa'uld?

Let them eat cake! ;D

I think it's to do with having the right space for it to rise - my bread was kind of hard until Abyssinia4077 told me about microwaving a glass of water and then putting the bread to rise in the steamy microwave.

Yum! And bah on the recipe. This way means more yummy bread! :D

Hand model? Did that mean you had to get other people to do anything that might remotely scratch you up?

LOTS of yummy bread - I've put about two-thirds of it in the freezer. *g*

Heh - well, yes, but only VERY briefly. My hands were used in an SMA photo campaign when I worked for an ad agency. They needed someone urgently, and decided I had the nicest hands in the office. :D
