I managed to make The Bread That Ate Manhattan this evening. I followed the recipe and everything. I think maybe I left it to rise too long. Still, it'll be lighter that way, which is probably a good thing for wholemeal walnut bread.

But the RL finished product looks like this - with, for comparison, my hand (did I ever tell you about the time I was a hand model? My life sounds so much more interesting in brief soundbites):

I should just look at it from the side. It looks relatively normal from the side:

Now I just wish that I could bake bread. Cookies? Sure. Cakes? No problem. Bread? Do we really need more ammunition with which to kill Goa'uld?
I think it's to do with having the right space for it to rise - my bread was kind of hard until Abyssinia4077 told me about microwaving a glass of water and then putting the bread to rise in the steamy microwave.
