"I babbled incoherently."

I'm not going to do the whole Stargate meme currently going around, because my answers are so similar to a lot of other people's that I can't be bothered (*g*), but I had a couple of thoughts, which I shall now tell you. Aren't you lucky?

I've noticed that most (all?) people seem to be choosing to be Tok'ra rather than Jaffa, and that interested me. I kind of thought everyone hated - or at least thoroughly disliked - the Tok'ra. It's not a straightforward question, though - I think it would depend on Jaffa when - before or after the rebellion? Because after... well, although building a new society and altering the programming you've had since birth ("You will obey your god!") sounds kind of tiresome, they're a lot more fun than the Tok'ra. And you don't have to have a symbiote - although that would mean being dependent on tretonin, which would also suck. Hm. The idea of having a symbiote does kind of intrigue me - I'm not as against it as, say, Jack. You could sit around for hours, cracking yourself up. :) Before the rebellion, definitely Tok'ra.

I was also thinking about my favourite SG-1 episode. This varies, but at the moment it's Heroes (both parts, because picking just one doesn't work). It's all about the characters. There is action, but it's almost incidental - no one really cares about why SG-13 is under fire offworld (do they?). The sheer amount of great moments is just amazing - Daniel making the camera crew chase him, grieving for Janet, hiding in the infirmary, giving Bregman the tape, visiting the new baby... Sam and her petrified expression when being introduced to the people of Earth, her "It's really cool. Steam comes out of it and everything", her moment with Jack, her trying to write a speech, her voice wobbling when she gives the speech... Teal'c refusing to speak in his interview, and then later helping Sam find the right words... Daniel, Teal'c and Sam all refusing to cooperate with Woolsey's interrogation... Jack being a smartass for Bregman, through to him being serious and sober (omg so very sober) when finally sitting down to be interviewed... Hammond is General-y and takes care of his people, but lets his opinion be changed by Bregman's sincerity. Bregman rocked, IMO - quite the most well-rounded guest character they've ever had. Kinsey is there, and Jack gets to yell at him, but everyone is being so awesome that I almost forget. Janet... oh, Janet. She gets a love interest, she gets to show her humour and her intelligence and her quiet professionalism, she gets to go offworld, and everyone gets to show how much they love her.

The whole thing just grabs me and gives me goosebumps, even reading the transcript. I can't watch it too often because it's a bit much. And hey, any episode that I can love this much, even when Jack is missing for a large chunk of it, has to be doing something right. :)

Er, no - there isn't a point to this ramble, other than "OMG I love Heroes!!1!!111!"

(Still no news. *chews nails*)

ETA: I knew this was coming, and yet I still managed to forget to include it... HAPPY BIRTHDAY ABYSSIS! But more about that later... ;)

I was thinking about this too...

You know why I think the Tok'ra are more popular? Because they're cooler. They've got that mysterious power edge thing going that the Jaffa don't have.

I mean the Jaffa are cool too, but even post-Rebellion they're a bit powereless aren't they?

Hero's is also one of my favourites. For all the reasons you mention. I didn't do the quiz because I have so many!! Hero's and Lost City, which I love, because its so teamy and good and Upgrades and Window of Opportunity and Divide and COnquer because its Jack and Sam and Martouf and gah and the Tok'ra because its Jacob and Sam...and OMG. I love my show :p

Yeah, the Jaffa are generally more followers than leaders, except for the odd few like Teal'c, Bra'tac, and whatsisname played by Isaac Hayes. It's been conditioned into them, I guess - I can see why people wouldn't choose that. But the Tok'ra have a lot of bad points, too. They're highly political, and deeply paranoid, and don't seem to trust one another, never mind outsiders. And Tok'ra fashion is hideous... *g*

My favourite episode never stays put. All those ones you mention - yes. Love them all for different reasons and different moments.

Y'know, I was thinking Jaffa myself. The Tok'ra are very... tiresome to me. I think I'm with Jack and his opinion of the Tok'ra. The Jaffa look after each other and the Tok'ra have no problem cutting out on their on people. That's not a crowd I'd want to hang with.

I really liked Bregman as well. I've liked that actor since he was own Nero Wolfe. The part that really gets me with him is when he's talking about the photojournalist with Daniel. I so love that moment. He also made me wonder why they hadn't been visually documenting the stargate program. It seems sorta strange. Even with such things as the Manhattan Project there were photos and such documenting the people involved.

Though really the best part of Heroes to me was SG-13 and especially Colonel Dixon. I love Adam Baldwin anyway, but he was so funny going on about his kids not to mention:

"Doctor Jackson's going to die when he sees this."
"What, again?"

I would have loved to see Colonel Dixon come on board SG-1 in season 9. I would have had much less problems with someone besides being leader of SG-1 if it was him.

Mm. I wouldn't feel safe amongst the Tok'ra. Never homely, never alone... no doors. I'd hate that. :) The Jaffa, though - well, if it was post-rebellion, that would be okay. Before that, though, there's a worryingly high chance of being randomly sent to die by a Goa'uld.

The guy who played Bregman is one of those actors that I know I've seen around - the Vancouver pool again. I've not seen Nero Wolfe, so it's not that... but something... I thought he was fantastic, in being irritating and invasive at first, and then coming round to being believably sincere and passionate. And I loved the little bit with him and Janet - it was so understated, but so clear.

Yeah, though - Dixon and his tirade about having four kids was just fantastic. Hee. I just adore the glimpse we get into everyones lives in that ep - the relaxed way SG-13 interact, it did feel like a proper team, and not just "pretend we all know each other really well, starting now."

Hm. I only watched Frasier sporadically, so it's possible... I've probably just seen him in various things, and he only really properly registered in my brain when I saw this.

Mine was just the reaction of not wanting my gut sliced open and having some creature twirling around in it. For some reason, the neck thing is more palatable.

(Yeah, I'm no good with needles either).

I mean, I'd be a Tok'ra if it could be someone cool like Selmak, and you could do the eye flange and work a healing device.

Some stuck up twit like Malek? Not so much.

I agree that Heroes is well acted, I just will never forgive them for the bait/switch craziness in killing Janet, since I was unspoiled.

Oh, god - imagine being stuck with a really annoying symbiote. A lot Some of them are pretty loathesome, and almost all of them have that very cold, calculating, long-term view that I just don't think I could like.

Aw! See, I was already spoilered when I watched Heroes, so I knew who was going to die - I wonder what my perspective on it would be, if I hadn't known? Then again, I like that sort of thing - I like the high drama and angst of killing off a dearly beloved character, so I'd probably still have liked it. Even though I wish Janet was still around, because she's so damn good, and there's so much they could still have done with her.

Please feel free to skip if you've heard my Heroes rant already...
But when you don't know which one? It's torture. I'm not a big fan of the surprise/"hook" beginning with a mystery to find out what brought you to this point. (I don't like "Meridian" partly for that reason too.)

Jack was obviously a red herring (hello? Name above the credits!) But, I mean, we only saw Sam at the beginning. And then Daniel finally popped up. Do you realize we don't see Teal'c until around the half-way point of the show? (At least after twenty minutes).

So I wasn't paying attention to what was happening in the show because I was just doing a mental checklist of characters. When it was finally revealed. I totally did a..."oh, they killed Janet. WTF?! They killed JANET! You bastards! And why didn't you just SAY that in the first place!"

As you may note, I'm still harboring a tiny bit of resentment over this. ;-)

A little bit of resentment, yes... ;)

I tend to go with the flow with programmes - rarely do I bother to keep up with the plot (which is why redial has been such a revelation to me - and probably why I stopped enjoying X-Files). I can totally see how that would be utterly distracting. Aw.

Heroes isn't my favorite episode, but it's really high up there for exactly the reason you gave (I love Daniel making the camera crew run after him and, really, every moment you mentioned). I have one quibble at the end that as much as the ending montage thing is good, I really, really wanted a teamy moment SO BAD (at the very least, someone on the team comforting Daniel) and I felt it hurt the episode a bit not to have that. I wanted to see them together the night after the funeral just...being there with each other.

As for the Tok'ra vs. Jaffa thing - it's interesting. In a way you're a slave to the Goa'uld either way - either having to dedicate your life to serving them or to destroying them.

And thank you!

"I wanted to see if you'd chase me." Hee - Daniel has a sneakily evil sense of humour, really.

Yeah, a teamy moment would have been nice. Well, it was followed shortly afterwards by Lost City, which was very teamy, so I can forgive that. I think I'm so used to Stargate not doing the after-effects, I kind of mentally insert them. "And then, of course, they all went to Jack's and he made Teal'c do the barbeque because he was injured and Sam and Daniel can't cook worth a damn, or so they claim, and they all sat around and drank Guinness and didn't have to tell each other how much they cared because they already knew."

Given the option, I wouldn't be Tok'ra OR Jaffa. That's Plan C. *g* They do rather live their lives around the Goa'uld, don't they?

Mm. I'm not entirely averse to the idea of a symbiote - I wouldn't exactly be jumping at the idea, but I wouldn't be turning it down if I were dying of Ancient plague. It would very much depend on what that symbiote is like, though. I guess they do have kind of a vetting system set up for that - when it's not an emergency.

My comment was supposed to look something like this:

I've had to wait for answers
weeks after interviews, so I do know what it's like. Hope it doesn't drag on much longer!

In fact, I waited darned near two months after the interview I had for my current job. I had basically given up before I got the offer. (In fact, they offered the job to someone else first, but that person declined. It doesn't matter how I got it, just that I got it!)

'Spose I ought to get back to doing said job....

Hee... I was perplexed by everyone choosing Tok'ra over Jaffa, too, mainly because I think as a Jaffa you have a lot more autonomy over your life. And there's a bigger sense of community.

And you could get on Tretonin and hang out with Bra'tac and Teal'c... what could be cooler?

Of course, you'd probably end up dead as either, particularly if you're hanging around SG-1.

And you made me want to watch "Heroes" again. Sigh. I can't think of an absolute favorite ep... maybe "Death Knell"? I'm a sucker for 'Sam and her boys' eps.

I also love "Out of Mind" and "Into the Fire" (it's where S/J started! I had no idea they had no plans on making Sam and Jack a thing until they saw the look RDA gave AT's naked back, and then the way he held her when they were hiding). I also enjoy "The Serpent's Venom" and "Foothold" and "Lost City" and "New Order Part 2" and yeah... it's easier to say which ones I really odon't like.

Hanging out with Bra'tac and Teal'c is definitely a plus. However, don't forget, you could hang out with Jacob if you're a Tok'ra!

I made myself want to watch Heroes, too. Yeah, I don't have any difficulty listing episodes I love, either. :)

Yeah, but I don't think you bond much with other Tok'ra. You're just kind of sent on missions on your own and then you report back, if you make it out alive. Plus, they're a lot more willing to sacrifice others.

And Anise would be there... not cool

At least as a Jaffa, you have a real community and you interact with others. There's more of a family life.

I've put WAY too much thought into this.

I picked Jaffa! Because I want muscles like that. What? ;P

Heroes is awesome for all the reasons you mention, and...
no one really cares about why SG-13 is under fire offworld (do they?)

*raises hand*

Actually, I love the action parts of Heroes - they add a whole level of realism to the story. It helped me identify with the SG teams and what they're out there doing every day. And I loved Adam Baldwin's Colonel Dixon. Man, I wish they could have got him back on the show.

Oh, the action stuff is lovely - but do you care about why they're under fire? Just curious, because I can't remember if they actually explain the bit with the exploding spy Goa'uld thingy. See, I like the bit with SG-13 finding the Ancient goodies, and then being under attack, and SG-1 and others going out to rescue them, and all that - but the setup as to why they're actually out there doesn't actually bother me, so long as it isn't glaringly nonsensical.

I wish they had more of Dixon, too. He's excellent. And usually snarky at Jack... or is that fanon...?
[identity profile] supplyship.livejournal.com wrote:
Mar. 21st, 2008 02:20 am (UTC)
Well, I kind of care, I guess. All season long the SGC has been in a race with Anubis to find anything Ancient/the Lost City. So, you have to assume that they're under fire from Anubus' jaffa, that it's not just any old jaffa attack. In a way, that background info - that SG-13's mission was strategically important - made Janet's sacrifice a little easier to take. Does that make any sense?

Yes, snarky!Dixon is most definitely canon. He has that whole, hilarious monologue on the joys of having children, and he makes that crack about Daniel dying "again". And when SG-1 shows up to the fight, he's all "Hi Jack! Thanks for coming!" HA! I really wish - when they decided that they needed a fourth for SG-1 in Season 9 - that they'd asked Adam Baldwin back.
