Davis would have been awesome! The odds seem high, though, that the actor has other work that would prevent him from taking the job.
The thing is... I really like Picardo. I think Woolsey is problematic, though. In a lot of ways.
But I've made the point elsewhere that there was a big negative outcry against Rodney, who was highly disliked by SG-1 fans, when it was discovered he'd been put on SGA. (I recall being one of the few people saying that it was a brilliant move on the show's part.) When you take a character from an occasional guest spot to a regular status, the opportunity is there to give the char more nuance and so on. The actor, too, needs to find more to play in the char when he's doing it full-time.
So hopefully, the Woolsey who's in charge of Atlantis won't be quite the same guy as the one we've seen.
Certainly unexpected. I was made to guess, and he was one of my guesses - eventually, after much prompting. I didn't think it would be Sheppard, or Daniel, or McKay, or...
But I think he's a good actor, I can see potential there, and it should shake things up. Davis would've been a joy, though. :)
See, I heard the idea floated a few days ago, and at the time I said I thought it was an unlikely possibility. If someone had said, "I'll bet you ten bucks..." I would have covered that bet immediately. So... huh!
I really do like Picardo a lot as an actor. I have faith in him as an actor. It all depends on exactly what iteration of Woolsey we end up with.
(Have you really not seen even the mid-season 2-parter of SGA S3? The one with the Jack and Woolsey team-up?)
:) See, really, I have no legitimate opinion about this, because I've seen half of season 1 of SGA, and that's it.
I can see how it might work. Woolsey's always been quite determined - even to the point of risking himself - to do the right thing, but he doesn't always have a clear idea of what that is. I'm having trouble picturing him in charge of anything, though. I don't picture him as having much management experience. But then, I have only seen him on SG-1, as Kinsey's rebellious flunkey.
Yes! You haven't seen the episodes in which he has been a clown and a coward. Woolsey was a good character at the start, but they drag him down, between late SG-1 ("The Scourge") and a couple of SGA episodes I won't mention here. We still get glimpses of strong, determined Woolsey, (SG-1: "Prototype," arguably "The Shroud") but mostly they seem to have forgotten he ever had that rebelliousness in him.
They have to bring it back, along with his determination to do the right thing.
Mm. Well, hopefully, with all the screentime he'll presumably be getting, they'll have to do that. They can't have a caricature Woolsey heading Atlantis.
I admired that he could admit he was wrong, and yet also still stand by the bits he believed were right. It wasn't black and white with him. Realising that Kinsey was trying to undermine the SGC didn't negate the faults Woolsey saw in it.
The biggest problem as I see it is that he's been written really... inconsistently since then, including on SGA itself. His most recent appearence on SGA was not encouraging.
A lot is going to depend, basically, on how they conceive of him in the role and thus how they write him in it. What direction they want to take (antagonistic? or "surprisingly effective"?).
Is it wrong that my main concern is that if Michael Shanks guest stars, I hope Amanda Tapping guest stars on the same eps, so we can see Sam and Daniel together again?
As for the Woolsey decision... seems kind of random, because he doesn't really seem like management material. But I'm not a huge SGA fan, so.... oh well.
While I'm a bit surprised, I can't say it's all that unexpected. I had a *tiny* bit of hope that it might be Daniel, but I thought it pretty unlikely that MS would be willing to do it. Guest shots, sure, but I know he and Chris Judge are working on their Rage of Angels project.
I think Woolsey is an interesting and provocative choice. Yeah, I think this can open up the story line quite a bit and in ways that appointing an SGC insider wouldn't.
Oddly, I think Woolsey has a lot less 'wank baggage' to the character than a lot of other choices. I'm sure the fans will find some, but I think having someone who has their own political agenda could be very interesting.
I think in the past few appearances, Woolsey really is trying to open his mind a bit. Not always succeeding, no, but he's tried.
I'm sort of blah about SGA at this point, particularly at the disappointingly limited use of Sam and her abilities this season. I am happy to see Robert Picardo get the job. I've loved him since he was on China Beach (and had hair). It might be interesting to have a 'fish out of water' running things if they do it right and someone that Sheppard and the others might not like and but heads with.
Personally, I hope the movies do well particularly Continium so we can get the possibility of more Jack. : )
I don't really care about SGA, to be honest. I quite enjoy it, but if I never watched another episode it wouldn't bother me. I've just not got the attachment to the cast that I do for SG-1.
I've tried really hard to get attached to the SGA team like I did to the SG1 team. It seems they didn't have enough character building and backstory episodes early on to let you know the characters. The Atlantis people come off very one dimensional to me. Ronon is the only one that I'm really attached to and we did learn quite a lot about him when he was introduced, so maybe that's why. I could totally watch "The Ronon Show". Especially when he uses Jaws references as he's MacGyvering his why out of a locked room and still manages to hit on the girl. ; )
Ronon intrigues me - or the reaction to him amongst people whose tastes I generally share, anyhow. And the little I've seen or read of him. Anyone who references Jaws is okay by me. :)
I think he and Jack would get on well. It's sad there wasn't any interaction with them in The Return. And there is an awesomely funny scene with Walter and Ronon in one ep.
Personally, I can't quite figure out why he doesn't seem to have a bigger of a fan base. And if I were prone to slash Sheppard/Ronon would be way hotter than Sheppard/McKay. ; )
I'm...not sure how I feel about this. My first thought was WTF!? Woolsey didn't even enter my mind as a possible choice. And, while I like his character in small doses, he comes in specifically to be the antagonist. So it makes me a little nervous. But I can see why they made the choice, because it definitely brings tension and will allow Sheppard to do his "rebellious, heroic officer" thing.
And I'm really glad Amanda decided to do Sanctuary instead because I like that better than Atlantis and I want to see her get more screentime
But I much prefer your idea to Woolsey. Because Paul Davis is love.
Yeah, I expect he's come out of left field for a lot of people. It's an interesting choice. I'd be far more likely to watch a show with Paul Davis as head of Atlantis, but that may be because I totally have an SG-1 bias. :)
I would not miss an episode if Davis was head of Atlantis. Of course, I totally have an SG-1 bias as well. Witness the fact that I only watched half a dozen or so eps of SGA before Amanda came. And I'm pretty sure they were all the ones where an SG-1 cast member guest starred. I only went back and watched the first two seasons so I would know what was going on storyline-wise.
No, seriously, this rates *way* more than popcorn. I'd say it deserves at least, say, hot wings and beer, except I find I'm culturally insensitive and can't come up with the proper British equivalent for Superbowl food.
I love SGA and this news while surprises me does not bother me at all. Maybe I am not hardcore enough...
However, Paul Davis would be awesome. I read somewhere about space pirates that would be awesome too. It would be more awesome to have Paul Davis be the SGC diplomat to the pirates. He would have to go undercover and grow a mustache.

Daniel shoulda got it!!!!!!
OOOOOOH MS in unspecified number of eps!!!
*Makes mental note to sweet talk parents into recording them when they appear on Sky 1.*
*Goes off muttering about stoopid Virgin Media and Sky*

Still seems like a weird-ass decision, though.

No! It's the one thing with Jack I've not seen. I will, at some point, get the DVDs.
I do think it could be a very good thing, though.

Hmmm.
I wonder if any of them have been put off by the reaction that AT got? Would serve certain sections right, if so.

I don't even have a Ronon icon. How sad is that?

You really do. *nods wisely*
And I miss Paul Davis! *sigh*
He was barely in the show, but I miss him too. He's such a sweetie. *pats him*

Yes! *loves your brain*
Although I only want him growing a moustache if it's a long one he can twirl. Because the horrible one in Moebius, I never want to see again.
I kind of see him having to grow the 'bad guy goatee' to fit in with all the woman who are being pirates and wearing leather.
