pepper: Pepperpot (Cuddle a Colonel)
It's occurred to me that, for the next few episodes of season 1 that we're watching for [profile] redial_the_gate, Jack is gloomy. In Solitudes he's dying-in-a-cave gloomy, in Tin Man he's robot-who's-had-his-life-taken-away gloomy, in TBFTGOG he's AU-apocalypse gloomy, in Politics he's they're-burying-the-Stargate gloomy, and in Within The Serpent's Grasp he's Skaara's-a-Goa'uld-and-he's-attacking-Earth gloomy. Granted, two of those aren't the 'real' Jack, but it struck me that we don't really see such a long run of seriousness in later seasons (presumably because RDA doesn't enjoy acting it for long - I can't say I blame him; it must be quite wearing).

Crack a smile, Jack - it's not the end of the world. Well, okay, it IS the end of the world...

Then again, he's never especially cheery. He's quite irritable and grumpy, most of the time. But I don't think he looks quite so consistently depressed, later on. Or am I imagining it?

Oh, thanks for the reminder! I'm doing the recap of Tin Man, so I'll be sure to rewatch it and do my write up over the holiday weekend. Something to look forward to, Yay!

Thanks!

:) No probs - I'm on a season 1 kick at the moment. I adore Tin Man. Jack's reaction to finding out he's a robot is so good. I feel like the writers were reading some good scifi at the time - Philip K. Dick perhaps. I'm looking forward to your recap so I can squee all about it. :)

In fact, I might research my just-thought-of-it scifi theory, see if there's anything in it.

Aw, poor Jack. Maybe there weren't any new episodes of The Simpsons for a while :)

Honestly, I find season one Jack pretty gloomy in general compared to later Jack. Which, really, makes sense.

Yes, endless Simpsons repeats - it's just not the same. *g*

Mm, yes, he is much more serious in season 1 - and it changes over time, which makes perfect sense. It's not long ago that he was suicidal.

As an aside, Sara gets mentioned a lot more than I remembered, in season 1 - not only Solitudes, but Daniel mentions her in Within The Serpent's Grasp, saying that in the apocalyptic world she was dead, as was Sam's whole family... Tactful, Daniel. Really tactful. *eyeroll*

Exactly - it'd be weird if he wasn't grumpy.

Yay Sara! *sigh* (I've built such a huge soft spot for them).
Oh, Daniel, yeah. Though, to be fair, Daniel himself was dead in that one so....

It was kind of a depressing AU, really. Everyone ends up dead (including Teal'c and all his family and friends on Chulak). Thus probably dooming the universe.

...Bummer.

I think I could actually count on one hand the number of times I remember seeing Jack smile in the entire run of Stargate.

Actually that's rather sad for 8+ years.

Poor, pitiful Jack.

Though I really do love his grouchiness.

I guess in season 1, he was still getting over the death of Charlie and Sara leaving him thing, so he was bound to be a little more depressed than later. Not to mention he was still getting to know SG1, so the weren't quite the 'family' then that they became later.

I've always wished there was more fic involving General O'Neill and Doctor Carter in TBFTGOG. I always wanted to know what differences made Jack be the general and Hammond the colonel. And, of course, see more of the AU!Sam/Jack relationship. I'm such a sucker for AUs.

Ah, very true, but I think he's often cheerful without smiling. *points at icon for example* Sometimes his straight-facedness is serious, sometimes it's light. Definitely part of the acting, because RDA seems to smile a lot.

I have to agree, though - the grouchiness is adorable. :) Sad!Jack I just want to squish.

Ooh, that AU is so intriguing! Particularly the Colonel/General thing, and the circumstances behind that difference. Heh: we should compare theories on redial in a couple of weeks. :)

That's because he starts sleeping with Sam. Presto. No more gloomy Jack.

I ♥ your brainz.

(OMG Jack and the way he gets totally hung up on he and Sam being engaged in another universe. *glees*
"It is theoretically possible."
"It's against regulations."
"I'm talking about physics, sir.")

You know how Jack gets once someone puts an idea in his head. *waggles eyebrows suggestively*

"Tell me more about physics then, because clearly I am missing out on something vital."

My S/J withdrawal has been most keen this week. Not sure I can survive 11 more days!!!!!!

My String Theory withdrawal kicked in unexpectedly yesterday. It was watching TBFTGOG that did it.

You can do it! You're nearly two-thirds of the way through the month!

A fic somewhere, by someone (oh how I wish I had some kind of workable memory), had Janet observing that it wasn't physics but chemistry that was the issue. :)

I miss sad!Jack, smirking!Jack, just... Jack period!

*sigh* heard some spoilers about him from Cliff Simon last Saturday at Burbank Con, really makes me CAN'T WAIT for Continuum...

(I'm really not too keen on Ark of Truth other than to zat-three-times the Ori story line :( )

I can't wait for Continuum either. Whee! And ooh, spoilers about Jack... I'm intrigued, but don't tell me! *flails* Anticipation will be the death of me.

Ah, there's a few things I'd love to zat three times, and the Ori as a whole are pretty much one of them.

Lackluster Jack
It always seems to me that General Jack is a bit depressed. He just doesn't seem to have the zest for life that Colonel Jack does. He's less likely to throw himself into what he's saying, arms waving, hands semaphoring. His sarcasm always seems just a bit darker as a result. I alway put it down to the effect of being deskbound and plagued by paperwork on a highly-kinetic ADHD-affected personality. It's like he's desperately trying to fool everybody by playing Jack, while not really feeling it. I don't imagine the whole Carter/Pete thing helped. Of course on a more pragmatic note, perhaps what we are seeing is RDA feeling like he'd rather be back in LA with Wylie, although he strikes me as a better actor than that.

Re: Lackluster Jack
Yeah, he did seem rather down when he was a General. Like you, I tend to think it's to do with RDA not wanting to be there - but yes, I might be being unfair about his acting abilities. It's impossible to know. But he still had his lighter moments - playing with props, making snarky remarks, and all the looks that SG-1 give one another. It's not a thing I can pin down... it may just be how I view the character.

Perhaps in season 1 they hadn't quite given RDA as full rein to fidget, as he does later on - so when he's serious, he seems very serious.

Or perhaps it's because two out of the five I cited were AU Jacks, and they had very good reasons to be serious and intense. Eh.

Mmm, serious!Jack... I rather like it. :)
