It's occurred to me that, for the next few episodes of season 1 that we're watching for [profile] redial_the_gate, Jack is gloomy. In Solitudes he's dying-in-a-cave gloomy, in Tin Man he's robot-who's-had-his-life-taken-away gloomy, in TBFTGOG he's AU-apocalypse gloomy, in Politics he's they're-burying-the-Stargate gloomy, and in Within The Serpent's Grasp he's Skaara's-a-Goa'uld-and-he's-attacking-Earth gloomy. Granted, two of those aren't the 'real' Jack, but it struck me that we don't really see such a long run of seriousness in later seasons (presumably because RDA doesn't enjoy acting it for long - I can't say I blame him; it must be quite wearing).

Crack a smile, Jack - it's not the end of the world. Well, okay, it IS the end of the world...

Then again, he's never especially cheery. He's quite irritable and grumpy, most of the time. But I don't think he looks quite so consistently depressed, later on. Or am I imagining it?

Lackluster Jack
It always seems to me that General Jack is a bit depressed. He just doesn't seem to have the zest for life that Colonel Jack does. He's less likely to throw himself into what he's saying, arms waving, hands semaphoring. His sarcasm always seems just a bit darker as a result. I alway put it down to the effect of being deskbound and plagued by paperwork on a highly-kinetic ADHD-affected personality. It's like he's desperately trying to fool everybody by playing Jack, while not really feeling it. I don't imagine the whole Carter/Pete thing helped. Of course on a more pragmatic note, perhaps what we are seeing is RDA feeling like he'd rather be back in LA with Wylie, although he strikes me as a better actor than that.

Re: Lackluster Jack
Yeah, he did seem rather down when he was a General. Like you, I tend to think it's to do with RDA not wanting to be there - but yes, I might be being unfair about his acting abilities. It's impossible to know. But he still had his lighter moments - playing with props, making snarky remarks, and all the looks that SG-1 give one another. It's not a thing I can pin down... it may just be how I view the character.

Perhaps in season 1 they hadn't quite given RDA as full rein to fidget, as he does later on - so when he's serious, he seems very serious.

Or perhaps it's because two out of the five I cited were AU Jacks, and they had very good reasons to be serious and intense. Eh.

Mmm, serious!Jack... I rather like it. :)
