Well, all I can say is, it sucks to be asleep when all the fun stuff happens. I might not have posted this anyhow, even had I been able to (the original post now seems to have been bahleeted, I guess because sticking your fingers in your ears and humming loudly solves a whole slew of problems), because I suspect it would have been rather wasted - but I put a lot of effort into it, so I'm posting it here instead.
Oh, I don't know about 'Fail' – you might just have scraped through. Let's break down your marks and see:
- Historical and cultural knowledge: F, I'm afraid. "It's just a joke," isn't really an excuse for ignorance.
- Openness to change: Again an F, unfortunately – it may have escaped your notice, but some of these responses were calm, rational explanations as to why people found your competition and/or community offensive, and why it perpetuated a problem sadly common in fandom. Most of them weren't personal attacks, and maybe you need to be willing to listen and learn, and admit you might have done something wrong. (This may go some way towards explaining your repeat appearances on fandom_wank.)
- Understanding of humour: Hm, nope, still F – may I suggest you have a look at Freud's 'Jokes And Their Relation To The Unconscious'? It won't make you funnier, but it might give you a better understanding of why you use humour to express your negativity.
It's not looking so good… Let's look at some other subjects:
- Understanding of irony: F for the practical – your use of icons clearly demonstrates an almost Morissette-esque grasp of the subject.
- Creativity: C! At least you're writing fanfic. It could be worse – you could actually have an influence beyond the 16 (at time of typing this) members of your community.
Oh dear, you may well be about to fail… Let's try one last one:
- Debating: I'm sorry, it's an F again. Arguing points that people haven't made, such as "You should love all SG-1 and SGA characters", is really not a valid debating method. Neither is changing horses mid-stream. If you hate the character because you think she'll interfere with your pairing of choice, stick to that (as lame as it is), and don't try to pass it off as criticism of the way the character was written.
Well, there you go: unfortunately, even with that one C grade, you still FAIL.
If you can answer the following resit questions, clearly and concisely, and without resorting to defensiveness and sophistry, you may scrape a pass:
- Illustrate how Sam has been measurably more badly-written or inconsistent than the other main characters on SG-1 or SGA. Or any other show.
- Demonstrate your knowledge of the historical and socio-political issues of feminism, and its relationship with popular media. Additional points are given if you can explain why, if Horatio Caine is "one of the worst written ego-cententric [sic] male characters on television," he's not been honoured with a comm.
- Show how you are being fair and reasonable in your dislike of Sam, and how it has nothing to do with the fear that she will somehow interfere with a fictional relationship between your favourite pairing.
- Explain why having multiple comms dedicated towards the death of characters you don't like makes it that much more acceptable. Is it quantity that matters?
- Explain in what way it is rational to feel this amount of vitriol towards a character who hasn't yet appeared as a regular on your show.
(Do I get an A for effort? *looks appealing* I know I get an F for timing. :(

Comments
Crap, it's lunch time.
I have more to say later. : )
I tried to save the post, as I was reading it as it was deleted (I realised it was vanishing 'cause when I clicked on threads to open them up, it came up with an error message), but I only got the main page - not all the threaded comments, which were the interesting bits. Someone may have saved it, though - I've not searched around. It was magnificent in its fingers-in-ears wankerosity.
When I first stumbled upon her comm a couple of months ago it had like 3 or 4 members. It seems she's gained a few members since. I did also notice that the user info's changed quite a bit since I first read it and they've added a little disclaimer to leave AT out of it. But still crazy, crazy people.
She says in her user info she wants to avoid wank but, really how could she not have realized that the 'contest' would be pretty damn imfalmmatory? Geez, talk about blinders.
I've been thinking about this all day and sorta mentioned it in a couple of comments, but I'm very tempted to start a comm to celebrate Sam in Atlantis and all the fascinating pairing options and/or friendships that could stem from that.
I guess the Stargate fandom has been due for some wankery...
It only had 16 members when I looked this morning, so I guess all this fuss still hasn't had a huge effect on her membership. Ha. And by the looks of it, it's not a hugely active comm, and will probably fall into disuse pretty quickly, once they find something else to flail about.
Yeah, I briefly thought about... well, getting someone else to start a comm (*g*), but then I thought I might just write some fic for the samcarter_gen comm, instead.
And I'm quite happy with the level of wankeriness in Stargate fandom as it is, thankyouvermuch. The HP fandom are welcome to hold the crown for that! :D
The HP and Supernatural seem to be the scariest fandoms at the moment. I'm so glad I was never interested in either of those.
Here's a grammar question: Would Sam be 'in' Atlantis or 'on' Atlantis? Atlantis is a city and I'd say 'I'm in New York,'. But it's also a ship (sorta) and I'd say 'I'm on the Enterprise.' It's been bugging me.
And yeah, I'm very glad that neither HP nor Supernatural appeals to me. *pokes them away with sharp stick*
...I'd say 'in', personally. Sam's in Atlantis... it just... sounds better, to me. *shrug* I don't know, really. Probably you could do both, but I'd find 'on' a little more noticeable.
You get an A for effort, and a B for timing--not your fault you weren't awake.
I wasn't sure about posting this, because usually I'm all about the positivity - I think negativity just breeds more negativity, and generally I can resist the temptation. But I'd put a lot of effort into being extremely superior and sarcastic. :)
(That's not to say I think she didn't need to be told, seriously and eloquently, why her comm was so stupid, and why people weren't prepared to put up with it - but I don't think anything needed adding, on that score, to the comments already made by you and others.)
...but this time I was right, dammit!
:-)
There is a huge difference between sleeping through exams (and I definitely had nightmares about that) and getting a normal night's sleep. I think we can make allowances for time zones.
Last thing I saw over there, just before it got deleted, she'd posted a whinge about Sam fans bringing all their friends over to personally attack her. Apparently she was reading a different comm to the one I read.
Although I'll give her the majority were people who at least liked Sam a little.
Including me.
You (and I) are probably more likely to comment because you like Sam, but you weren't irrational because of that.
What I will say is that I find the *idea* of such a community distasteful.
And she *was* pretty dumb for not being able to acknowledge her own prejudices.
But then she deleted it and switched horses, and, well. You'd think people would learn that the way not to get f_w'd is to NOT SAY STOOPID SHIT.
(Man, I love that word. I learnt it from the romance novels of Georgette Heyer, you know. *g*)
You are still awesome. You definitely get an A for effort, abut since the timing is not your fault, definitely not an F for that.
Because, YES YES. Guh!
I missed it!!!
Did anyone get screencaps???
Oh, and Sam is kickarse! We all know this :D
There's screencaps of some of it on fandom_wank, I believe (there are links in the comments) - some of the threads were lost, unfortunately for connoisseurs of this stuff.
And yes, I agree: Sam is indeed kickarse. :)
A+, pass with high honors.
*It's what I get for taking so long to read the debrief!
