pepper: Pepperpot (Pepperpot)
So, hello! I am still around, but mostly lurking in other peoples' ljs at the moment – much easier than writing my own entries, which means making a mental effort.

News... I'm currently – temporarily - working in a different department, in a far more prescriptive environment, processing forms, lunch is from then to then, home time is on the dot... But it's pretty mindless, and the enforced getting-on-with-stuff is making me want to write again, hallelujah.

I need to put together a small website, to show off my (limited) skills in that area, for the job application in the other department here (they're unlikely to look at it, but you never know). At the moment, my only website is my fanfic one, and... no.

It doesn't really matter what I do a sample website about, so long as it's relatively non-embarrassing (no not too many pics of hot boyz). I was thinking about making it educationalish, and I've come up with a few ideas... I could do it about King Alfred, seeing as I went to that exhibition and still haven't posted about it... or I could do it about... something else... art, Jenny Holzer and all that (I've got a dissertation on her around somewhere)... or... Heck, I could do it on paper bags, it doesn't really matter.

Should I do the King Alfred thing? Or anyone got any other bright ideas?

Ahoy-hoy. Last week I was interviewing candidates for a web type job. We cruelly only allowed them to bring hardcopy materials but they could provide a CD of sites as well.

If you're making a web site why not make it about web sites themselves, links to the really useful resources, scripts and tips you might use? It shows not only can you do the thing on a basic level but you know how the thing should be done in an ideal world.

It's an idea... and, hey, maybe I can later persuade them to send me on a course, to learn more - you never know. Hmm...

You cruel taskmaster, you. So what are you like as an interviewer? Good cop or bad cop? :)

Hi!
It might be useful to do something that ties in with your degree - it's in art, isn't it? (or am I hallucinating again...)
You've got your dissertation that you can work in, but you can also show how your interests have developed since then (and how the degree has been useful to you -- if it has been useful to you)

Art, yes. The only thing about that is that I ran so far, far away from it all, afterwards, that I've pretty much forgotten everything I learnt. *g*

Now I'm starting to like it again, though - I might re-read my dissertation (if I can find the damn thing) and see if it's at all comprehensible. It made sense to me at the time, but I was kind of buried in it.

And I could put animations, wot I learned to do in my Maya course... Hmm, maybe I should do that as a bigger project, properly...

Let's see if I can get this without looking it up...

King Alfred fought against the Saxon invasion, right? And I think he was very religious too.

I'm sorry. I have no useful information. I'm completely ignorant about website construction. And I too am immersed in a job hunt. Only on my end it involves an insanely long incredibly detailed application. You'd think I was applying for the CIA not an art school. Why can't someone just magically offer us wonderful well paying jobs without having to do all this crap?

Almost. He united the Saxon kingdoms, fought the Danes, and established kinda peaceful relations with them. And yes, religious - and a great believer in knowledge, and getting the clergy to learn to write...

...And I have a whole post to put together about this. :)

Yes. With you on the job application thing. What I wish is that they could all be standard, so I don't have to find out different information and present it in a different way every goddamn time.

Well, crap. I got the Danes and Saxons mixed up. Oh, well, they were all invaders at some point.

I started reading a trilogy a while ago about a Saxon boy that got captured during one of the invasions and was adopted into a family of Danes. He became a warrior for them, though he did eventually switch sides. Alfred wasn't portrayed in the most flattering light. He was weak and more concerned about religion and than really repelling the invaders.

Hmm, I should see if that last book is out yet.

I think you should design this site with the idea in mind that it's an adjunct to your resume. Use it to show what you can do, but not in the "flash-bang" sense. Any "flash-bang" needs to be used RIGHT and not just because you can. :-)

Consider, too, that you might be able to pick up some outside work from something like this, as well. As your skills improve, you could update the site to reflect that.

As to the art, consider using it as an accent. I presented a professional paper (along with a coworker) a few years back and integrated various works of art into my IT Power Point presentation. Granted, part of the reason was to try and keep people awake in a conference packed with Power Point presentations, but still. ;-) We got very high marks from our peers on presentation. ;-)

And people said I'd never use my Art History minor.

I think there are a million things you can do for the website, and some really good ideas here already. When I was interviewed for this job, my interviewer gave me a very limited time to create a powerpoint presentation, and I did mine on a volunteer project I was part of at the time--thus highlighting that aspect of my life as well. :-)
