pepper: Pepperpot (Not that complex)
Ah, nuts. I was trying to be productive this evening, but it's too coooooooooold. So I'm sitting with lighted candles (visual warmth), huddling up to my laptop (physical warmth), and asking stupid questions (er... psychological warmth?):

Comment here and ask me ANYTHING about any fandom I'm involved in/have been involved in, or fandom in general. Controversial or innocent, silly or serious, ask and you'll get my honest opinion on the subject [to the best of my knowledge/ability].

So (in no particular order) that's Stargate SG-1, X-Men, Doctor Who, Robin of Sherwood, X-Files, Blake's Seven, Sapphire & Steel, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., The Magnificent Seven, Buffy, Star Trek (original and TNG), The Mummy, Black Books... and a bunch of other stuff that I can't remember offhand, but surely that's enough to be going on with? If I've mentioned it, feel free to ask about it.

Your favorite character from the X-Men, and why, and one thing that everyone ought to know about him/her but inexplicably doesn't.

Did you start watching Buffy from the beginning? If so, what do you think about how the characters changed over time?

Ooh, well, Wolverine is my favourite, because he's a grumpy bastard, and he's completely softhearted underneath, and he has lots of hidden talents and skills and knowledge, and he likes to wind people up, and has a dark past, and sometimes he's actually not a nice person, at all. (And I totally have a type.) And, hm... see, the X-Men facts are so changeable, and Wolverine's such a well-known character... Um. He was a very sickly child, son of a rich 19th century landowner. He wore frills. :)

And I didn't watch Buffy properly until it was over (I saw a few eps, thought it looked interesting, but there was a lot of backstory so it was hard to understand). However, when I did get into it, I borrowed the videos / DVDs from my brother, and watched them in order. I loved how they evolved the characters - I think it's one of the strongest things about Joss Whedon's writing, how he lets them change and evolve and grow, and be affected by the things that happen to them.

I did not know that. *grins at the image presented*

I forgot, for a moment, when I asked that question, about the, ah...mutability...of canon inside X-Men. Nevertheless, it's surprising how well the characters stay in character, over time and generally. (Speaking from outside, mind you.)

Joss Whedon is seriously brilliant. I definitely think he's got a finger on a secret stash of awesome. I watched Buffy for the first couple of seasons, and then missed some, so I was very surprised at how the characters had shifted--but looking back and having filled in bits, I can see how it worked out. :-D

Yeah, X-Men has a whole warship's worth of canons. Facts change as and when it's convenient. It's one of the reasons I gave up reading the comics - it drove me mildly nuts. But yes, the characters mostly seem to stay the same, sort of. Well, the main ones. Most of them. Sort of. Actually, Rogue changed a heck of a lot...

Yes to Joss Whedon. I don't know many shows that allow that much change in their characters. Stargate doesn't really - okay, it has some change, but overall they're not half as screwed up as they should be. IMO.

Oddly enough, this is one of the things I find charming about the show, as well as frustrating.

(Rogue--oh, boy. I totally loved her. I did get into the fandom about the movies--but I read just about every Rogue story I could get my hands on. Which is probably only a fraction of the stories out there. Yeah. I think she appealed to my inner angst-whore).

Ah, I didn't watch the cartoon until after I'd seen the film. That was my first X-Men experience. Rogue is my very close second favourite. She has the angstiest mutation ever omg.

Oh, yes. There were lots of angsty fannish stories in my head that were completely her fault. And maybe a bit of time thinking jealously about her ability to do anything and how she could totally be the most powerful mutant evar. And maybe also some ruminations over whether I liked her better with Gambit or Wolverine (even in the movies, which is probably totally wrong, but...oh well).

I wanted the film Rogue to get some of the powers she had in the comics / cartoon - because she had a few trials, but I love the whole storyline of how she acquired the flying and invulnerability permanently, and accidentally sort-of killed Wolverine's friend in the process. Angst heaven!

And, yes, movie Wolverine/Rogue, wrong... but when she grows up a little... He's over 100, so a few years for him won't make any difference...

Who's your favorite and least favorite secondary character(s) on SG-1?

What is your favorite/least favorite alien tech and/or mythology in the show?

And because turnabout is fairplay, you evil, evil woman...

If you had to kill off one member of SG-1, past or present, who would you choose? And why?

Hm. Favourite secondary character would be Jacob (um, if we're not counting Janet - I find it hard to think of her as a secondary character, although I guess she is). Jacob just seems so real - he has a lot of authority, and he's a pain in the ass, and he's got a sneaky sense of humour, and you can see a lot of why Sam is how she is from watching Jacob.

Least favourite... Er, I'm not fond of Landry (again, it's arguable how much of a secondary character he is). He just annoys me - which Beau Bridges doesn't usually do. He just feels a bit tactless and thoughtless, and unsubtle. To me.

Favourite alien tech - I like that mysterious thing that Jack picked up and asked Teal'c what it was, and Teal'c refused to explain ("What do you think it is?"), and Jack got icked. I don't know what the hell it was, and I don't really care to find out. :)

Least favourite... the weather device in Touchstone, I wasn't convinced that it would be a good idea in the long term - no matter how much practice they had in balancing it, it just seemed like it would cause more trouble than good.

And, hah, I thought I should give you a chance to get revenge. :) Well, Cam is the one who springs to mind, if I'm honest. I don't really want to kill any of them off, but he's the one I'd miss the least. And it would be all tragic, and he'd have a heroic death, and everyone would be sad. I'm all for the killing off of main characters, if it works for the story. Keeps things from feeling too safe.

In my world, Janet is totally a primary character (of course, in my world Jacob isn't dead either, so...LOL)

Favourite alien tech - I like that mysterious thing that Jack picked up and asked Teal'c what it was, and Teal'c refused to explain ("What do you think it is?"), and Jack got icked. I don't know what the hell it was, and I don't really care to find out. :)

Oh hee! That was so awesome. And you couldn't quite tell whether Teal'c knew and didn't deign to explain, or was totally bluffing because he didn't know either.

If it's a matter of who I'd miss the least, I'd go Jonas myself. But I still think he got a bit of a raw deal in canon.

I actually forgot about Jonas. Oops! :7 But yes, perhaps him, on that basis. Poor Jonas.

In my personal canon, Teal'c totally knew what that thing was, and it was something completely uninteresting and technological - he just wanted to freak Jack out. *g*

Who's your favourite doctor and why?

Riker...beard or no beard?

Your opinion on Buffy's sister?

And last but not least....what do you think of the deluise influence on SG-1?

Ooh...

Well, favourite Doctor... I think it has to be Peter Davison. Not because he's better than other Doctors (Tennant and Tom Baker are the ones I jointly consider 'best'), but because he's MY Doctor, and I have a completely sentimental attachment to him.

Riker... beard. I think he looks hideous with it, but I liked his character better in the beardy years. Generally I can't stand him, though.

Buffy's sister - I thought it was a brilliant way of bringing in a new character, and although she's annoying, I felt that she was meant to be annoying. I kind of liked her. I thought she brought out some interesting ideas.

And... well, occasionally I find Peter Deluise a bit annoying and flippant, but he also directed some of my favourite eps, and seems to exercise a proper, thoughtful, directorial control over the show when actually working, so overall, a good influence. Dom Deluise I love, but I don't think he fitted well with the show, if I'm honest. I've seen him interviewed, though, and could listen to him talking for hours. David Deluise, well, I found Pete Shanahan a bit irksome, but I don't hold that against the actor. :) But boy, there's a lot of Deluises on that show. Rather nepotistic.

Me no like cold any more. Roll on summer, pls.

Hm. Well, the first thing that made me pay attention was Jack O'Neill finding Kinsey in his house, and the casual way he called the police, shushing Kinsey with his gun - "It's ringing." And then Kinsey pulled the phone out of the wall... and Jack took out his mobile, and kept on phoning. *g*

That was the first ep I saw (Full Alert) - completely ass-backwards way to get into it. I thought Daniel looked dashing with his James Bond dishevelled look (well, I didn't know), and there were some other people, and it was quite exciting and totally confusing.

But that was enough to get me to look it up online, and vaguely remember enjoying the film, and find some Sam/Jack fic - I think by Jojo - online, and fall for the pairing, and research which was the shippiest season, and buy season 4. And I watched it in a very few days, so that's all kind of a blur, but I was hooked by the end.

I had seen the film and when I heard that Channel 4 would be showing the TV Series version I decided to watch out of curiosity. It normally takes 2-3 episodes for me to actually like a series. But Stargate grabbed me with it's first episode. COTG has so many 'made me sit up and think this isn't good this is great' moments. Jack and his telescope, the Kleenex moment, Dr/Capt Carter geeking out and making a McGyver comment, the Science Twins bonding in the Cartouche Room... Oh I could go on and on. It's not often that the charactisics of a character are established so firmly in the first episode. But we knew by the end of part 2 of COTG who each member of SG1 were and what role in the team they would play.

Teal'c. Definitely. Worf's okay, but Teal'c has the power of Ineffable Cool. Worf would get his Klingon weapons caught on everything (seriously, those things have too many ornamental frills and furbelows).

(Unless you mean I'm fighting one of them, in which case I'd rather fight Worf!)

Ineffable Cool

That he does. I think Worf aspires to Ineffable Cool and does get there sometimes, but not as innately as Teal'c. And yes, I did mean by your side in battle, not who you'd prefer to battle yourself. ;-)

Phew. Because Worf might not be ineffably cool, but he could still kick my ass. *g*

I think Worf has the problem that he looks a bit daft when he's angry (possibly a problem with the show more than the character), whereas Teal'c's anger is an impressive, serious thing, and not daft in the slightest.

Hm... I'm not amazingly fond of Gambit, just because of his overuse of the third person. It's a wee bit irritating. But aside from that, I don't hate the pairing. They do seem to have a lot of problems, and issues with Mystique that are a little icky. And they don't seem to trust each other a great deal. I dunno - it just doesn't especially ping me. See, there's the obvious answers - fishing, depths of a museum, working on the bike / naquadah reactor ("This is fun to me, sir."), visiting Ry'ac - but that's boring.

So -

Jack: Beach. Drinks with little umbrellas and girls with little bikinis. He's a sunfish, I believe. Working on an even tan.

Teal'c: Angkor Wat (Cambodian temple) - because he's working on seeing all the wonders of Earth, and is doing it alphabetically.

Daniel: The nearest, highest mountain. He spends a lot of his time looking at things very close up, and every now and then feels the need to stretch his eyes and look at the far distance.

Sam: Diving. She's working on her scuba diving certificate. She's seen alien worlds, but sometimes the life on Earth is stranger.

Well... Manny tries to save the day with his awesome knowledge of how to make a raft from banana skins and some old soap. Bernard gets himself entangled in some rope, throws a tantrum and knocks a hole in the raft. All panic. Bernard comes up with a very complex plan, that would only work if we'd planned the sinking three months ahead. Fran eventually takes charge, and we float to safety in her enormous shoe suitcases.

Three weeks later, we land, and vow never to speak to one another again.

We'd have to paddle with the shoes. And we'd have to restrain Fran, who would insist that she ABSOLUTELY needs to take ALL of them with her - what if we get rescued by drug dealers who invite us to party on their yacht? We take some. Eventually, in a state of thirst-induced delirium, we eat them.

Hey, what's all this morbid stuff about 'battle to the death', eh?

;)

Well, I can't believe Felger could ever win, in that fight. He'd have an amazing idea involving lasers, but it would go horribly wrong at the wrong moment. Whereas Woolsy would have a boring idea, and follow it through to the letter, and it would work, and he'd win. But everyone would hate him for killing Felger (even though they found Felger more than a little annoying).
