*may not contain real cake.

Also, four more posts about the Sagrada Familia, because it's a fascinating place.
vickyocean perfectly described it as being like "giant decaying stalagmites" - and that may be because of this method of designing:

It doesn't photograph well, but those are basically loops of string with small weights attached. This is, if I remember right, a recreation of Gaudi's original model, which he sketched, and then turned upside-down. That's why the place looks like it's hanging off the Earth. It looks like it's about to fall on you...

...but is actually very stable, if a little scary to climb. Inside the towers are winding stone staircases, and they played merry hell with my stair phobia...

...not to mention being hell on the knees. But it was well worth the climb, for the view and to see some of the amazing details up close. It looks organic, and it plays tricks with your eyes, because the more you look at it, the more you realise you're seeing angels in the architecture.

(there may not be cake, but there will be mutant armadillo that tastes like chicken)
Such neat photos! I love the staircase (though I think I wouldn't love going down it)
I hated going down that staircase - I kept picturing what would happen if I tripped. Something like Homer trying to jump that ravine on the skateboard. :S And there were no lights except what came in the windows - joy. However, it was worth it.
(definitely mutant armadillo ...and I want sangria! *glares at computer she's chained to*)
I bet - there's a tower in Boston (much shorter I think than yours) with a similar staircase and I hate going down it.
I wanna go back, we had such a fantastic time in Barcelona about a year and half ago.
