Also, four more posts about the Sagrada Familia, because it's a fascinating place. [profile] vickyocean perfectly described it as being like "giant decaying stalagmites" - and that may be because of this method of designing:

It doesn't photograph well, but those are basically loops of string with small weights attached. This is, if I remember right, a recreation of Gaudi's original model, which he sketched, and then turned upside-down. That's why the place looks like it's hanging off the Earth. It looks like it's about to fall on you...

...but is actually very stable, if a little scary to climb. Inside the towers are winding stone staircases, and they played merry hell with my stair phobia...

...not to mention being hell on the knees. But it was well worth the climb, for the view and to see some of the amazing details up close. It looks organic, and it plays tricks with your eyes, because the more you look at it, the more you realise you're seeing angels in the architecture.

Yeah - and you don't see them at first. The whole place is like an optical illusion, and the closer you look at it, the more things jump out at you. I'd love to have spent a lot more time there than I did.
