Okay, last post (sorry, I've been totally spamming you all today).

Title: It's A Tough Job, But Somebody Has To Do It
Author: Pepper
Rating: G
Featured Character(s): Jack, Sam, Daniel, Teal'c
Pairing(s): None
Summary: It's a tough life, being on SG-1.
A/N: I've done this trick before, but hey – wishful thinking time.

---

Jack shifted, stretching his left leg out until the muscles were taut, and then letting it drop. That knee always played up. "Ah, god."

To his left, Sam sighed. Daniel, one over from Sam, mumbled something that sounded like agreement. To Jack's right, Teal'c said, "Indeed."

There was silence for a while.

"You think they'll make us wait for the council's decision for long?" asked Sam, tiredness in her voice.

"Y'mor said it'd only be a day or so," said Daniel, without opening his eyes.

A longer, more thoughtful silence.

"Is there... any possibility it'll take longer?" asked Sam, tentatively.

Daniel, sensing scrutiny, opened his eyes and blinked at the three people looking at him. He shrugged. "I could... talk to Y'mor," he said. "Find out more about how the," he waved one hand, vaguely, "legal stuff works." It wasn't the most eloquent he'd ever been, but he couldn't seem to summon the energy right now.

Jack settled back, closing his eyes again. "You do that," he said.

Peaceful silence settled again.

Jack's hand, questing to the right, found the rough skin of the one of the husks that held their drinks. He lifted it to his lips, eyes still closed, and was just about to take a sip when a hand clamped around his wrist, with just enough pressure to suggest the word 'snap'.

He opened his eyes quickly, to find himself on the receiving end of a Very Intimidating Glare.

Teal'c took the drink from his hand, and replaced it with Jack's own – considerably less full – one. Jack eyed Teal'c's drink sadly. "I only wanted a sip."

"If you require further refreshment, O'Neill, I suggest you fetch it yourself."

Jack squinted into the bright sunlight. Further down the golden sands of the beach, just beneath a small group of fronded trees, there was a little bar. The building itself was concealed beneath a decorative covering of the colourful local fruits and flowers. Just beyond it, the green-blue sea curving gently around the little tropical paradise, filling the crystal blue sky with the rhythmic susurration of the waves.

Dammit, it had to be at least a hundred yards away.

He glanced to his left. Sam was drowsing, her mouth open slightly, and – more importantly – her drink resting unwatched in a bucket full of ice on the floor between their sunloungers. Using top secret skillz he might have learnt during his time in Black Ops, he reached out and snagged her drink. Ooh, it still had little bits of fruit floating in it and everything. He took a sip, and sighed with pleasure as the cool liquid trickled down his throat and refreshed his sun-heated body.

Ahhhhhhhhhh... bliss.

Then he shrieked like a girl when Sam upended the ice bucket all over him.

I wanted to mention the hot beach sex that Sam and Jack are having, but was afraid I would be banished into the outer darkness. Obviously the idea of Sam/Jack hot beach sex has successfully permeated the fic, though.

;D

Real subtle.

Hee.

I want to write, but feel nothing available to tap. Hate that.

I know the feeling. I seem to be able to write ficlets, when prompted (this came from a conversation with Abyssis in previous post), but anything proper, or anything off my own bat... *sigh*

If you want a prompt, though...? I have thorts. *g*

w00t!

SG-1 eat at a commissary / canteen on another planet. There's always the one dish that no one should ever try...

OR, Sam and Jack, in a ship, stuck in an asteroid field. I'm thinking of Han and Leia, my favourite scene...

Carter was close to figuring it out. She twisted her upper body so she could get at a troublesome crystal near the back of the panel while trying to avoid touching any of the power lines running through the space. She managed to get the crystal tuned properly, and started to withdraw her hand, carefully navigating through the other crystals...

*Zap!*

Sam jerked back involuntarily, but kept moving until she was against the wall. She dropped her tool and shook her hand, wincing at the uniquely uncomfortable sensation of having just been slightly electrocuted.

"Trouble, Carter?"

Carter shook her head to clear it and stood up gingerly. "Not really, sir."

Colonel O'Neill stood in the doorway, an amused smirk on his face. "You done in here, then, or do you have to do that a couple more times?"

Carter guessed it was probably amusing...to watch. She really wasn't in the mood to be laughed at, though, and she almost frowned.

"Actually, sir, I just have to make sure I didn't short anything out and then we should be good to go."

O'Neill didn't miss the hint of annoyance in her tone, but he ignored it.

Carter grabbed the tool and crouched near the panel again. She checked each row of crystal methodically, getting the green light on all of them. She was very conscious of Colonel O'Neill over her shoulder the whole time. It was irritating, but she avoided looking at him, knowing he was in one of his moods.

"Carter," he said just as she started the last row.

She just barely managed to avoid hitting the power lines again. She paused a moment, then kept going.

He leaned even closer and said, "Carter," so close that his breath tickled her ear.

Carter bit back a retort. Honestly, someday she was going to request a medal for keeping herself under control when he baited her like this.

She turned her head, hoping it would force him back. "Yes, sir?" she asked innocently.

He didn't move back. He couldn't be more than two inches from her face. His eyes flicked to her lips, and Carter suddenly felt a surprised jolt as she redefined her irritation and annoyance into something a little different.

"Are you almost done?"

She refused to pull back. She licked her lips quickly, and O'Neill followed the gesture. "Almost."

Oh, yeah. Not exactly annoyance.

"You wanna...take a break?"

"And do what? Sir."

She *felt* him shrug, he was that close, and suddenly, Carter knew he was going to kiss her. It wasn't like he had to move, even, he just sort of...nudged closer to her, and she wanted to back away, but didn't, and then he was brushing her lips and then leaning into her. She was slightly off-balance, so she reached out for him, putting her arms around his neck. He hummed into her lips and--

She heard footsteps in the corridor.

"Sam? Have you finished yet? Jack was looking for you earlier." Daniel's voice preceded him into the room. By the time he rounded the corner, Sam was bent back over the panel, and O'Neill was across the room, sitting against the wall, his head tilted back against it.

Sam finished the row with a flourish, stood up, and said, "There. done."

Daniel looked at her curiously. "You okay? You look a little warm."

Sam blinked. "Warm? No, I feel fine. Let's get out of this asteroid field."

O'Neill said, "Finally," and stood up. He gestured to Carter to go first, with Daniel following her back to the bridge.

Yeah, I blatantly stole from Wayside School.

*_*_*_*_*

The locals were staring at him.

Jack surrepticiously wiped a hand across his face. Nope. Nothing there. But they were still staring.

"Guys," he said in a calm, quiet voice, "Do you know why our new friends are staring at us?"

In a moment, all three had taken a nonchalant look around the room in a rehersed maneuver that would have done self-conscious junior high girls proud.

Daniel said, "I don't know, but it's weird."

Teal'c said, "I believe they're looking at the food item you chose."

Carter and Daniel looked around again.

"Huh," Daniel commented.

All four of them looked at his plate. A pile of messy gray goop sat in the middle.

"Is that even edible?" Daniel asked.

Jack shrugged. He just hadn't been paying attention to much of anything when he'd been asked which dish he wanted. Carter's plate was filled with what looked like buttery vegetables, and Daniel and Teal'c had both stocked up on thin-sliced meat of some kind.

He said, "I think they said it had mushrooms in it."

Teal'c raised an eyebrow.

Jack shrugged again and picked up the vaguely fork-like implement in front of him. He dug it into the goop, which squelched.

"I can't watch," Daniel said.

Carter, who was sitting next to Jack, looked around the room again. "They obviously know something. Sir, I don't think you should--"

Jack stuck a large scoop of whatever it was into his mouth, chewed, and swallowed.

"Huh," he said. "Not bad. Kinda tastes like a cross between lemon and cheddar cheese."

Daniel said, "Okay, that just sounds--"

Jack's face flushed. His eyes looked disturbingly unfocused. Sam scooted back along the bench, afraid Jack was going to throw up.

But he didn't. Instead, he stood up, grabbed Sam, making her stand up, too. And then he kissed her. On the lips.

Then he sat back down. Sam stood still, in shock.

Daniel said, "Jack--what did you just--"

Jack looked up, his eyes guiless and wide. "What? Do I have something on my face?"

"You don't remember what just happened?"

"Daniel, we just got food. Nothing's happened." He looked up at Carter.

"Carter? Why are you still standing? I won't bite."

Carter sat down slowly. "I'm going nuts."

Teal'c said, "Indeed you are not, Major Carter. I saw it."

Jack had picked up the fork-thing again, but stopped short of taking another bite. "Saw what?"

Teal'c and Daniel opened their mouths simultaneously, but didn't get the chance to speak.

"Colonel O'Neill! You are truly a brave man!" Their host, whose name had been shortened to "Ed" withing two minutes of their introduction, came up behind Jack and clapped him on the shoulder. "In all my years I've never seen anyone try the Ghe'hara, although Rita swears on her life that it's simply delightful."

Daniel looked thoughtful a moment, then choked with laughter. "Ghe'hara!"

Carter, Jack, and Teal'c looked puzzled.

Daniel added, "Essentially, Jack, you're eating mushroom surprise."

They all took another look at the goop.

Carter said, "That explains a lot."

Teal'c said, "Indeed."

Jack shrugged and dug into it for another spoonful.
