Heh. I was just lj commenting to
aoife_himeabout Edward Gorey, which prompted me to look him up on the interweb - and I found the perfect illustrative picture to go with my scary dream with the bears:
Hmm, what else can I warble on about today... I'm going to ask for Friday off. Shouldn't be a problem, boss is out anyhow, and I doubt he'll object to me TAKING MY 30th BIRTHDAY OFF.
And I'm not freaking out about that. I'm not. (Well, perhaps a little bit...) Partly because I don't seem to have any time to freak out about it, what with the impending end of my temp work contract, the intensive cleaning of our flat (because we're moving in June and the landlords could theoretically showing our flat from, oh, this weekend), the friend's hen three-day-weekend I'm helping to organise (fun, don't get me wrong, but complicated), and... what else? Oh, my Maya animation course (yesterday, fun, crammed lots of learning in, I'd be allowed to go in and use their computers during the day, to practice, if only I wasn't at bloody work), er... oh, and probably some other stuff that's totally gone out of my head. Am v. tired.
I'm thinking of getting a tattoo for my 30th. The one I already had was for my 21st, and I designed it myself, and it was significant in a whole lot of ways, but mainly to remind me to live for the moment, and not worry about what my 80-year-old self will think of it all. This time (if I do it), I may get an om symbol. For various reasons. Mainly, it's meant a lot to me since the whole India trip, and it will serve as a reminder that a little wide-eyed, non-cynical spirituality is No Bad Thing, on occasion. I tend towards the cynically amused when it comes to anything vaguely New Age, but now and then I think I should let the attitude drop, and be a little more open.
edit: YO!
holdouttrout... You are/were watching season 9, weren't you? Or thereabouts? Only there is fun discussion about it on
abyssinia4077's lj, she and I are at about the same point (Ripple Effect), and I saw you weren't on her flist, so thought I'd see if you were around / at that point. I'm enjoying talking about a show as it unfolds (well, on DVD) - as opposed to my usual situation of everyone else having seen it. The Cam love is evolving. There is talk of Teal'c. (Hope you don't mind me pimping this,
abyssinia4077? I feel like I'm trying to matchmake. *g*)

Happy, happy birthday, Pepper.
And, ooh! Prompt. What would I like? Well, Sam/Jack, obviously. Er... Hmm... Something with a sunrise, or a sunset - and maybe some bats. Dunno why (why not? is, I think, the more pertinent question).
And I'm happy to have got to know you, too. Anyone who calls me a menace and whose default setting is Sam/Jack apocafic is someone I want to know. ;D
(And all the best people are just about to turn / have just turned 30 this year, you know.)
You know that 6 degrees of separation thing? I can apply that to Edward Gorey, actually (though it's not quite six degrees - it's less). One of my friends here at school has an uncle who was in NYC in the 70's and was hit on in a bookstore by Edward Gorey. Nothing came of it, though.
Taking your birthday off sounds like a great idea to me! And I think that's a very cool idea for a tattoo. I'm kinda sick of seeing doves everywhere - it seems like everyone I know who gets a tattoo gets some kind of dove!
And that's cool about Edward Gorey. I didn't know he was gay. Well, I know nothing about him, actually, other than I love his drawings. They've got the entire collection of Gashleycrumb Tinies here: http://users.aol.com/emarko/gorey.html
I agree - part of a tattoo is what it means to whoever gets it.
Yeah. I wouldn't want something decorative-but-meaningless forever tattooed on me. Of course, I wouldn't want something ugly-but-significant forever, either... *g*
I particularly love Prue, trampled flat in a brawl, for some reason. *g* Poor little Prue. Kate and Xerxes are nightmareish. And Ida is pretty (and sinister - that goes without saying).
Definitely a good excuse for taking Friday off! Also, happy early birthday!
You're reason not to worry about getting tattoo has always been my reason to not get one - I just can't think of anything I know I'll be happy to have later - but I think I'm not good with permanence. Oh, and your India trip sounds like it was really awesome.
That would be a bummer, but it could happen.
Edward Gorey (or Ogdred Weary, as he's sometimes published as) rocks. He's so morbid! And funny! *g* I'd love to be able to draw like him. It's not that it's particularly hard, more that it's intensive - time-consuming.
That's a good theory...and you're brave than me :) Though, I've definitely thrown my life into sudden changes (and I think I'm getting ready to do so again) just...not of the permanent body altering type :)
Plus, I keep thinking that if I did get one it would be some Jewish symbol only that would be ironic since technically tattooing is against Jewish law.
He does rock. There's something about morbid humor that hits the spot sometimes :)

Wow, they're lovely pictures, thanks for the link. Deep sea fish are freaky. The one in Finding Nemo scared the bejesus out of me. *g*
