Okay, I am going to multiple post today, because I'm all excited (but apparently not enough to remember I planned to post about this, earlier - d'oh!). My animation course starts today! Woohoo!

It's an evening course, 2 hours a week for 10 weeks. I'll be learning how to use Maya software, which does 3D wireframe modelling and animation. It's the package used (apparently) by Pixar, and is also used on South Park, Futurama (for the 3D bits), and various games, such as Resident Evil. It's also been used in films such as King Kong, The Chronicles of Narnia, War Of The Worlds... I'm vey excited.

Also, fuck me if there isn't a job going for 3D Artist on Stargate SG1 / Atlantis. Required skills? Lightwave 3D, Maya, Tracking, Modeling, Animation. Unfortunately, it's at the other side of the world. And, of course, I've not actually learnt any Maya yet. *g* Still - all those commentaries that I thought were OMG boring, being all about the SFX? So going to go back and listen to them all again. Ooh! I can learn how to animate a wormhole puddle! *is hopping up and down with glee*

No, I didn't apply for the course because of Stargate - I'm not quite that bad. Not quite.  *g* I've always had an interest in animation - Stargate is just a bonus bit of excitement.

p.s. This is the list of benefits for the Stargate job - heh:

-Regular Hours
-Comfy Chairs
-Paid Overtime
-A fridge full of snacks, food and drink
-Trips to set
-Direct contact with Producers and Visual Effects Supervisors
-A relaxed environment with great people
-Cool sequences to work on
-The chance to learn and grow as an artist.

Maya is an awesome program to work with :D

and what do you know... technically I could apply for that job.

Pity it's halfway around the world and I'd need a visa :P

hehe last year I was modelling water effects and created one that was very similar to the stargate puddle. I had such a fangirl moment :D One day I will create the lifesize replica!

Ooh, cool - it's nice to hear from someone who's actually used it - I'd never heard of it before I started looking at courses. I've got a couple of books on it, and it sounds like my knowledge of Photoshop and Adobe Premiere (and a tiny, tiny bit of Avid) will help me get started.

*wants the job with the comfy chairs* Someday I'm going to have to move to Vancouver. I've been thinking that for about fifteen years or so, and more reasons keep cropping up.

Lifesize replica! LOL

Seriously... in my more crackified moments when thinking of 'really cool things I could totally make if I had the money and the time' a fully operational (apart from the you know, wormhole to other planets) Stargate is at the top of my list.

Fibreglass and resin mould casting with an extensive paint job, an electric motor and some simple wiring for lighting and presto! The real trick would be getting close enough to the real thing so I could make it a proper replica

< /dream >

And once you get used to Maya, it's great to work with!

It would make a lovely garden ornament, I'm sure. :D

*wants one*

I've just helped my dad clear his garden. It totally needs something like that now it's all empty and tidy.

Maya's a great program. And it's not too hard. Now if only I could get around to actually learning it. I've only had learning on 3DsMax6 or whatever it is. And that was ages ago.

*drools at benefits*

This is great, there seems to be a pool of knowledge out there (I should've known Stargate fans would know this sort of stuff). I'm so going to be asking questions, I warn you! :D

Although, of course, feel free to ignore them.
