Okay, if this week could just END now, pls.

That's enough, thanks, this week.

The latest round of bigoted fuckwittery * wins hands down, of course, and I really, really hate how it's hurt some of my friends. That's my angle on it - it's not just that it's offensive to a larger group of people (that's wrong, but harder to connect with), but it's offending people I like. They have been really upset by it, and that kind of makes me want to go around with my Doc Martens and kick the offendee until they're sorry. Fortunately, wiser and more educated heads have done the talking thing, instead, and have explained just why they're upset by it, and I've been reading their entries, and it just makes me so sad. Why would anyone want to make my friends (or anyone) feel like that? Okay, that's overly naive of me. But sometimes I do just want the world to be rainbows and flowers, and sometimes I really don't understand why people go out of their way to make it not so.

Personally, I've had morons on Monday, a dentist visit on Tuesday (and, ow, she was brutal - normally I don't have a problem with dentists, but just, OW! When I'm involuntarily squeaking in pain, that means STOP THE FUCK WITH THE PRODDING), and further moronage today, with an additional meeting mix-up, and the sort of phonecall that goes, roughly:

Them: "Where do you want the lunch?"
Me: "What lunch?"
Them: "The lunch for 50 people for your meeting."
Me: "What meeting?"
Them: "...."
Me: "....oh god."

ENUFF already. I get the point. There better not be anything Thursday and Friday, I'm not sure I'll deal very well with it.

I'm swearing a lot this week, and I do apologise if I'm offending people. Sorry. I will cut it out again soon.

Now I'm off to eat my own bodyweight in unwanted sandwiches.

I went to read the post you linked, and then the post that linked, and I'm still not entirely clear on what the problem is. It seems to me as if the original poster was trying to say that we (as human beings) have a collective responsibility for the burden of our history and that special victim status occludes that. I don't have a problem with that point of view.

But perhaps I'm misreading. Or perhaps the problem is that in any discussion of religion or ethnicity someone shows up to say "word, dude, those [expletive deleteds] hack me off too".

Oh, no - it wasn't the original poster that caused the offence - no one objected to that. It was the comments that rydra_wong linked directly to that upset people. So, yeah, the second point. It did just seem to be one person, so it didn't turn into a huge thing, but it did upset people on my flist (and came shortly after another, bigger thing around Yuletide, which turned very nasty).

And I've just checked, and realised that some of the comments originally posted have now been deleted, which may be why you're confused. :)

I should check these things before I post about them, darn it.

Okay, I think I'm clear now. And in the context of the previous Yuletide furore makes even more sense. I have been tangentially involved in that because it's affected a lot of people on my flist.

I would also like the word to be rainbows and flowers but I'm happy as long as people are talking and thinking and engaging brain generally. What annoys me is bigoted and willful ignorance - and when that's what's going on no engagement is helpful and you just have to detach.

Indeed.

Mostly I keep out of it when LJ goes splodey, unless I'm personally affected by the issues - because I don't want to be ambulance-chasing, or talking about things of which I don't have enough knowledge. But this just... I was really pissed off by how it had affected people on my flist, and I wanted to come down on the expressing-my-support side, for once.

Ambulance chasing is a really good metaphor for some of what goes on.

I think it's sad when someone tries to open up a dialogue and the whole thing turns into a sour morass of hackneyed idiocy. Maybe it just isn't possible to talk about important things (tm) on teh interweb.
