Checking in

pepper: Pepperpot (Scarily intense)
I feel like I've not been around much lately. It's not exactly true; I have been lurking, and posting comments in other people's journals, but I've been much less verbose in my own lj. Lack of fannish energy at the moment. Anything I do have, I'm trying to concentrate it in my [profile] reel_sg1  fic, which I have a hope of finishing on time, despite the fact that it's surprisingly long. I think that's because I've kind of got a structure there to work from - i.e. the film for which I'm doing the crossover.

The apocafic is still late, and getting later - but I figure that's already majorly late, so I'll try and do the ficathon fics I have a chance of getting done on time, and then focus on that. It makes sense in my mind.

Also, I pretty much know what I want to write for [profile] sg1_by_hand, omg. But I might need to read up some good fics along that theme - or track down some comms that have information on how to write that sort of stuff. Anyone got any good recommendations? *g*

What else is new... I was thinking of this the other day: nonplussed! Why the confusion with this word? Many times I have seen it, and wanted to tell the writer, "I do not think it means what you think it means." I used it myself in a fic the other day, and debated for a moment whether I should change it, as people might misunderstand. But I have decided, NO! I shall promote good use of the word nonplussed (n. "A state of utter perplexity.").

Oh, and I made an animated icon that said, "Stargate. It's all about the hair.", but it's too big. I must sacrifice some of the Stargate hair pictures to be able to use it on LJ. But it's very difficult to choose which to drop. I can't drop Teal'c's frightening hair from Gamekeeper, or beard from Small Victories, or the pic from Redemption when he was finally allowed to grow his own hair, or Sam's greasy mop from Beneath The Surface, or her non-regulation long locks from just before that, or her mad hair after she takes the life jacket off in Moebius, or Daniel's hair from Need (evil bouffant omg!), or his pudding-basin cut from Into The Fire, or his hideous, hideous wig in Moebius. Jack, strangely, doesn't seem to actually have truly bad hair in any pics I can find, but I can't drop his lovely unshavenness in 2010, or the ruffled look from Fallen, or the strange dye-job from Moebius (Moebius is THE hair episode, I've decided).

Stargate: it really is all about the hair.

That's my brain for today.

"good recommendations": http://thassalia.livejournal.com/280181.html

(my by_hand story is actually all done but the final edit. Apocafic? I'm so right there with you. teamfic? *runs away screaming*)
(I'm really excited to see your Labyrinth fic though)
Good luck!

(it IS about the hair. What about Teal'c's 1969 Afro?)

I know! I wanted to add that, too, but the thing's already too big to actually use as an icon. I decided I'd go with the Gamekeeper wig rather than the 1969 wig, for sheer eye-bleeding amusement value.

On reflection, I think Daniel suffers the most with his hair. Like the girl with the curl: when it's good, it's very, very good, but when it's bad, it's horrid.

Thank you very much for the recommendations, I shall take a look when, er, not at work. *g* I'm very impressed you've done your by_hand fic already. The teamfic isn't due for a while yet... surely? *handwaves about deadlines*

I'm so loving writing the Labyrinth fic. Fingers crossed it'll be done for Sunday, though. They've only just reached the Fierys.

Daniel DOES suffer a lot. The floppy hair in late S2 was almost diva-like and then there was the "Hathor's Romulan Jaffa attacked me with a weed-whacker" cut. And those crazy bangs in early S5 and those sideburns in late S5. But sometimes his hair is GOOD. (as you said).
Sam suffers too - but mostly that wretched early S4 bob (when Teal'c had his chin caterpillar).

Also, [livejournal.com profile] _minxy_ wrote one called "Self-Assembly Required"
Yeah, for some reason by_hand came REALLY EASILY and quick (I mean, it really needs a serious edit/rewrite but...). Teamfic is due Nov 1st but no stories go live until they're all submitted so there's extra pressure and I keep looking at my prompt and having my brain go blank.

Yay fic!

Well, I'd argue that there are some Jack haircuts during S1 and early S2 that were *bad*, for his hair. That was during the phase where they were dyeing it, and they would give him these super-short cuts that... ugh, it's hard to explain why I think they're bad, because you wouldn't think that there could be so much variation in "short military hair", but there *is*. I think it's that... when his hair is cut well, they leave it just a little longer on top and a little shorter on the sides/back. (But without getting nutty about it.) Whereas, the cut I'm thinking about was, I think, all one length everywhere. It looked to me like David Letterman's hair.

Also, for really really horrid Jack hair, I direct you to the awful wig they gave him along with the ageing makeup in "Brief Candle" (I really can't even watch the 2nd half of that ep, the whole ageing thing bugs me so much).

Oh, Brief Candle, yes - how could I forget! I don't hate the later, longer wig, but the first thing with the really obvious receeding hairline hair-cover thing is nasty, and also pretty badly applied. Very much spot-where-it's-been-glued-to-his-forehead-and-painted-over-with-makeup.

And the thing about Jack's hair is, although I'm with you on his early hair being bad, it doesn't stand out in pictures (to me) as LOOK AT THAT AWFUL HAIR! At least, it's generally not the first thing I notice. Whereas with, say, some of Daniel's more spectacular disasters, I find it hard to focus on anything else. *g*

On the subject of badish Jack hair, I don't like Jack's centre-parting in Urgo. I think it's too neat and looks weird.

You could always break it up by character. And have several bad hair icons. You probably have lots of material to work with, judging by the sheer quantity of bad hair I can think of off the top of my head.

Good luck with writing!

Yeah, I might end up doing that. Trouble is, I have limited icon space. Of course, other people are free to nab them, so they might not go totally to waste. Anyhow, it's fun to look at pictures of SG-1's hair. (Oh, I so need a life. *g*)

And, ta! I won't know what to do, once I've finished these ficathons. I'm going to try to resist signing up for more, because, ugh.

Or--you could pare down the multi-one for lj, and then make separate character icons.

*shrugs* You'll figure it out.

Yay for ficathons. (Yay in the Monty Python sense of the word).

Okay, what do you use to make animated icons? Because I feel like this should work for you. I've made icons with a fair number of frames in them, and kept them under the 40kb. Would you be interested in sending me the frames and telling me what you want it to do, and I can run it through PSP's animation shop and see what pops out?

I mean, obviously I could be wrong, but it's worth a try!

I use Adobe ImageReady - so they're PSDs or gifs. Would either of those work? Because, yay! You'd be very kind.

I'm just emailing them to you now.
