It's a comm!

pepper: Pepperpot (Wheee!)

Hear ye, hear ye...

Announcing the arrival of

[profile] redial_the_gate, a comm in which we're going to rewatch all - yes, all - of the Stargate episodes, including the film. Yes, this will take about four years. What, you had something better to do?

It's still in the stage of being set up, so please step carefully around any exposed cables, wear your hard hat at all times, and don't lean against the paint. It'll be fully operational (fingers crossed) for discussion of the film on Tuesday 24th July, just in time for the 10th anniversary of the debut of Stargate: SG-1 (27th July). *gets misty and sentimental*

So dust off that old VHS of Stargate the movie, give it a watch, visit the comm, and join the squee!

And don't forget to bow down in praise to [profile] abyssinia4077, the genius who thought of it in the first place, and the driving force behind setting it up. KNEEL BEFORE YOUR GOD, TAU'RI!

*picks up tools, gets back to work*

---

Oh, before I forget - does anyone know how to chat to more than one person via IM? So that all the people involved can chat at the same time, in the same window, I mean - like a conference call (I can do the holding-two-separate-conversations-at-once thing, although it does make my head want to explode). Is it easy, or do you have to download a specific IM service? I've failed at teh internetz, and can't work it out.

I do! And I swear, I've used it twice. There's, like, one person in th world whom I speak to on anything.

Um. Anyway. It's the little button that says chat on it that looks like the IM button only it says chat and has several people on it.

Hm. But what IM do you use - MSN, AIM, Yahoo, Google, Trillian... there's such a lot! I don't seem to have a 'chat' button on mine.

*headdesk* You said IM so I read it as AIM. Which are you? Google Talk doesn't have any form of it that I know of. I'm pretty sure there's a way for MSN to do it that's pretty much the same, and I've never used Yahoo or heard of Trillian.

But look around for something like conference, or chat, or group. You should never have to download a seperate one for it; if it has the ability, it'll be there.

Aha, that explains it. I've had a look at Google Talk, Trillian, and Yahoo, none of which have a group chat function (unless I'm being blind) - and stopped there, because there's several dozen of the buggers, and I thought it'd probably turn out quicker to ask people than to look at every single one. And I was right! Thank you! *g*

Irritatingly, I had problems with AIM, which is why I usually use Trillian - it's an IM that connects to several different messengers, i.e. I can connect to my AIM username, and my old Yahoo one, at the same time. Or "available" on the Yahoo one and "away" on the AIM one. 'Tis very useful - like having a universal remote. I hate the clutter of lots of different messengers for different people.

*heads gloomily back to AIM*

You can use Trillian with different chat clients, AIM for sure. I'm not so sure about Google or Yahoo, MSN, etc. You can create a chat room in AIM, save the shortcut to it to your desktop and then you can always get back in. People in Trillian, etc can join the chatroom if they know the name. It's a bit more difficult to actually *invite* people into a chat room from Trillian.

Anyway, how muddled was that? My suggestion would be to create a chat room in either Trillian or Aim, remember the name, and then let people know which Messenger service its on and its name and as they say, if you build it, they will come.

Ah... hm. I see I shall be playing around with the settings tonight. That sounds ideal.

I've never used or created chat rooms, so it's all shiny and new to me. Thank you!

You should be able to set up a group chat room through Trillian. Sadly, I have no idea how anymore, since I only used it about three versions ago.

Groovy. I couldn't find it last night, but I shall look again with renewed energy. And not at, like, 12midnight, which may have been part of the problem. :)

Hee :)

*loves your announcement*

(to be fair, it was an idea I saw several people bounce around - I just took the bull by the horns and made the community)

I just realized....do you think LJ talk could be used for your evil plan?

I have NO clue. *g* I'm going to do some trials of various different messenger services this evening, if there are people around to log into chatrooms, etc, with me. *bats eyelashes at you*

And it occurred to me this morning that Friday 27th will be the absolute most perfect time to do a mutual watching of COTG. 10 years to the day.

(I came on when I got home but you were not...I have NO CLUE how large chatrooms work)

you know, I have spent the last week looking at calendars and thinking the 27th was a Thursday. My brain is through. But you are right - would be PERFECT!

What, you had something better to do?

What is this "RL" thing people keep talking about...? :)

I've used mIRC in the past for large group chats, but I'm guessing that wouldn't be very practical here.

Meh. See, I've never been involved with a group chat at all, so I'll look at all possibilities. *notes down name* But I think whatever's easiest and/or most popular will be the one I go for. I get the impression that the majority of people are on AIM, or can access AIM.

RL... RL... it rings a bell...

Wait, you're just trying to figure out how to do a buddy chat? I thought you were looking at something more complicated.

I'm not very good at it, but IIRC, one of the menu options on AIM (and depending on what version you have depends on where the button is). But that's inviting buddies to join you in chat. Setting one up and giving an open invitation...that I'm not so sure of. Is there anything in the help menu?

The help menu was amongst the first things I tried. ;)

Well, actually, I looked on the AIM homepage, and couldn't find anything about chatting with more than one person at a time - I didn't look on an AIM messenger thingy itself, but I shall tonight.

It's probably dead easy, and I just missed it completely - it was very late when I tried it, that's my excuse.

Here's the general help http://help.aol.com/aimhelp/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&externalId=http--helpchannelsaolcom-kjumpadparticleId185589&sliceId=&dialogID=92574835&stateId=1%200%2092646165

And then here's the specific "how to guide", I don't see why it wouldn't work for AIM as well as AOL: Member Created Chat Rooms (http://help.aol.com/aimhelp/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&externalId=http--helpchannelsaolcom-kjumpadparticleId185589&sliceId=&dialogID=92574835&stateId=1%200%2092646165). I'll do a test from my aim account (by the way, it's auroranovarum if you want to look for me)

hmm. it looks as if you're an aol member, you can create a chat room where anyone can join in, but if you're an "AIM" member, you can only invite specific individuals into a chat.

How annoying.

Peppfld on AIM.

On AIM I'm... actually, I can't remember my AIM name. I will find out when I get home. Heading home from work now, will be back online in two or three hours.

Thank you so much.

I'm so ridiculously excited about this re-watching thing. It's like...the show never ended! Or...never will end?

Something like that.

As far as chatting...I'm sure it's possible to set it up in Trillian, seeing as how I'm nearly sure I did a lot of chats in Trillian when I had it...but then again, haven't used it in about 8 million years, so...

Good luck?

I know exactly what you mean. I'm so excited about the rewatch thing, too. By the time it actually comes around, I'll have worn myself out. *g*

You know, I bet I just didn't see the right button on Trillian, or something. Or perhaps it didn't work 'cause I wasn't actually talking to anyone - I was just looking at the, um... thingy. The bit that's not the message window. (Gawd, my technical vocabulary is non-existent.) Maybe I needed to have a messenger window actually open. I shall experiment this evening.

The buddy list? Yeah, possibly. You might also look at File/Edit/Something else>Invite to Chat. Or maybe right click on someone's name and see if there's a chat option there...

I've found it on Trillian. Looks like I'd have to invite people individually on that, though, rather than just saying 'this is the chatroom name, turn up'.

Blast, blast, blast. Further investigation needed.

At least I'm getting the gist now, though.
