Considering that your fic tends to have excellent comic timing, and as someone who struggles in writing comedy that's actually funny, I'd definitely be interested in reading!

(also, please to be yelling at me to finish writing the redial_the_gate faq because we need to open for business and I am completely dragging my heels)

Oh, cripes, yes, the redial_the_gate - curses, I still haven't finished the icon, either. But I have ordered a copy of the film, hoorah! *g* Need any input for the faq?

And, aw, thank you! I don't know how good I am - I like to think I'm not bad, but 'funny' is so subjective - but I'm very interested in comedy. I've talked about it a lot with people in my real life, but they're not really interested in fanfic, funny or otherwise, so I have lots of thinky things to say.

I know. I think I've spent the last week telling myself "finish setting the thing up already!" and just....getting distracted. Bleh. Yeah, once I get a rough draft going, I'll be posting for input. Maybe you can help add the funny :)

You are definitely good at the funny in fic (and other emotions too, depending on the story).

Well, thank you, I very much appreciate it. I think it takes practice, much as any kind of writing, and I still make myself faintly nausous when I read stuff I've tried to make funny and which is just horrible, and heavy-handed. Doing humour badly makes me cringe much more than doing angst badly.

I've been distracted of late, too. Dunno why. Not got my mind in the right place. But I've been watching the show lots, so maybe I'm storing up my fannish energy... *g*

I get that. I have these little mental urges to do fannish things but the last few days I've been completely un-motivated to even read fic. Bleh.

I think I need a recharge.

Yes, please! I like to think I have a passing skill at comedic writing, but it does take work! I'd love to hear what you have to say, because you write so well!

And then can you do Angst? Because a lot of the time I write what I think is horrible angst, and people reply with 'Oh, that was cute!' Which horrifies me, but obviously the problem lies with me.

Eep! Angst? Hm... Ooh... I think I like that idea, yes. I think there's a lot of people who're a lot better at angst than me, and who've probably given that subject a lot more thought than I have, but I shall provide my views as a starting point.

I swear, I used to hate writing essays when I had to, but now I don't have to, I'm loving it. It's a great exercise for getting all my thoughts in some kind of order. Because my head is all over the place, so writing it down is forcing me to think stuff through, think about why I look at things in a certain way, or do things in a certain way, or like/dislike certain things, and draw some logical conclusions. i.e. I'm not right in the head. *g*

Haa! Every time I think about writing essays, I think of school, and how I didn't much mind writing them, but I'd never use contractions because then you could pad the word count and reach the goal faster. :D

I think comedy and angst are actually two of the most difficult categories to get right. I think it comes very natural to some, but most run into problems now and again. And I think some discussion would only help! :)

:) Oh, eep, yes, I remember doing that. I had a Big Important final essay once for which I simply couldn't think of one more thing to say, so I went through and changed all the contractions, and just scraped over the wordcount. Heh.

I think angst definitely deserves a look at, too - I think all this comes from Annerb's post recently about the angst people coming down against fluff, or vice versa, I forget the details, but I started feeling all defensive about fluff, and then realised that a) I wasn't being attacked, so I should chill the hell out, and b) I don't necessarily want to defend fluff. Comedy is a different thing to fluff, and IMO works best with elements of tragedy in it. So then I got all thinky.

Aaaaand I'm going to save this for my comedy meta, but yes to the difficulty of both. :D

Comedy!

*rushes in with yellow cross-garters* :D

I'm a big fan of the humour in writing. Humour with a "u" that is...

Heh, now how did I guess you might be? *g* See, this is why I want to post this - a lot of my flist make me laugh my socks off, you definitely included, and I'm curious about your thoughts on the technical stuff of writing humor.

I'm going to spell it the American way, in honor of the 4th July. *g*

Awesome, I was just talking to [livejournal.com profile] starting_gate last night about comedy vs. tragedy. I can't wait to your take! :)
