pepper: Pepperpot (Monk phobias)

I haven't squeed about my course lately. Mainly because, for the last two lessons (which are once a week), our usual tutor was away. We had someone who claimed to be "just as knowledgeable". That may well have been the case, but his ability to communicate that knowledge was non-existent, so we spent the lessons pootling around with the programme. Which, y'know, is all well and good as a learning method (that's pretty much how I learnt Photoshop), but I have the programme downloaded onto my laptop at home. I can pootle in my spare time. Bah.

But anyhow, yesterday, Juan - the regular tutor - was back, and there was much rejoicing (in my brain, anyhow - the class is pretty quiet and subdued). We learnt about how to create a curve that can be rotated so you get something that's symmetrical, all the way around. I made a table lamp that lit up. *g*

I'm definitely getting to grips with the basics. And the good thing is, now I'm not moving house, I'm able to go in to the college during the summer, after the course has finished. Juan said we could just call him and ask if it was okay to use the computers. Whee! I'll definitely have to take him up on that, if I can get some free time.

In fannish news, I can't concentrate. I have lots of new shinies, and that's not a very good idea. There's the

[profile] gateverse_remix that I must get done (once I've finished my 'research' - i.e. watching certain eps). There's the Sam/Daniel cutefest with [profile] abyssinia4077 that I want to write more for. There's a project me, [personal profile] geneeste, and [profile] vickyocean have tentatively started (I'm all about the collaboration, lately). And yesterday, [profile] vickyocean  mentioned a plot bunny to me, and now all I want to write is a Stargate western. Gah! Must. Concentrate. On. One. Thing. At. A. Time.

Oh, and I must must must email / phone my rl friend Vick. Because she emailed me ages ago and I didn't reply. Very bad me. Sorry, Vick, if you're reading this - I did get it, and I will reply! I swear! :)

Yay for fun coursework!

I hear you, I so, so hear you - too many WiPs, not enough focusing power in my brain. But yay on more for the cutefest (I'm working on the baseball game still in my head).

Showdown at the Stargate corral? That would be AWESOME!

And you know Jack would love playing cowboys... [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] sent me this link to the only Stargate western she knew of: http://perso.orange.fr/hito-76/Western.htm. Trouble is, it's in French. I can read just about enough French to get the gist. Frustrating and intriguing.

*hits brain* Must not do it NOW. Must do remix first.

And I forgot to add to that list, 'Jack's lost year after Sara left'. I want to do that, too. Grah.

I think I know about 2 words in French - the little I took of it refused to stick in my brain at all so I'm not even going to try.

Jack would totally have watched spaghetti Westerns growing up and definitely would have loved to play cowboy. No question.

Remix. Right.
(and you can't write Jack's lost year until after the remix anyway)

Yes, master. :D

I wonder if she'd object to me translating that story into English... I think, with some help from Babel Fish, I could...

"Enough of that, Colonel. Doctor Jackson has received a letter."

"What?" demanded O'Neill. "We're having a briefing because Daniel got mail? I myself, just yesterday, got an invoice..."

"This letter is more than a hundred years old," said the archaeologist, irritably.

Jack raised his eyebrows. "More than...? Ah, okay... My invoice isn't... quite as..."

"And it was me who sent it."

hee :) I want to get a hundred year old letter from myself!

(I'd ask you how your remix was going, but then you might ask me how mine was going and then I might have to run away screaming and nobody wants that)

*sends tea and sympathy*

Time to bring out the ol' ficathon icon again... It's going to wear out, at this rate. :)

Much better than I got out of my sketchy French and Google translator. The Stargate was the 'Door of Stars'. ; )

If I have time, I might give it a go - it'd be a good exercise for me, anyhow (I've been meaning to try to improve my French)... It's quite a long fic. I skimmed through it enough to find the kiss scene, though. *g*

However, I really must ask her first. Hm. Means I need to write an email in French decent enough to not immediately make her say "No way in hell!" Eek.

Yes, someone asked to translate one of my fics once into french once. I didn't realize Stargate had such a following in France. I gave permission for her to do it. I wonder what ever came of it. Hmm...

I didn't make it as far as the kiss. Though I totally love how she referenced the Back to the Future movies. They re-translate very weirdly.

I considered her sending an email about how much I love her art work, but like I said my french is very shaky. I don't think I could put together a whole sentence anymore other than "Je m'appelle Vicky". And I probably didn't spell that right.

I found her lj, and might message her on that. There was links on there to a whole load of other French Stargate stuff. Funny. All that fic I'll never read...

I didn't see the Back to the Future reference! Heh. But I only skimmed it.

I always get stuck with my extreme lack of vocabulary. I can conjugate verbs, but damned if I remember any actual nouns. I do have a very useful book of French swearwords, though. *g*

You're taking a course in Maya right? One of my ex-boyfriends was a computer animation major. I fooled around with the program a bit. I found it easier to learn following the tutorials in the textbook than just messing around with the program. My Computer Art teacher was horrible in college and I had to basically teach myself photoshop. Maybe that extra dimension isn't quite as intuitive, because most artists spend more time thinking in 2D.

Well I'm glad I'm spreading the lack of the ability to concentrate on one thing around. It makes me feel better about my own chaos. : )

Haha! Please take your chaos back! My brain is bad enough as it is. ;D

Yeah, Maya. It's definitely something I wanted some lessons on, rather than just messing around and trying to pick it up that way. I don't think it's the 3D-ness that's the problem (for me, anyhow) so much as all the technical things - things like knowing to switch the rendering to high quality if you want to see textures such as glass... Not stuff you can just find. Things you have to do in the right order, or it all goes pear-shaped very quickly.

And that's pretty much why I taught myself Photoshop, too - we had a Computer-Aided Design teacher who... well, he found the Photoshop filters terribly exciting and high-tech, and that was about it. "Look, you can make it look all sepia-tone, like an old picture!" Well, not that I don't enjoy that effect, but what else can we do? "Turn it into a mosaic!" Oh, right, great, thanks.

My Photoshop guy just wanted to lecture us. A lecture is fine for Art History, but not so much for learning to make something. And he had a horrible monotone voice too. Gah, he was awful.

Ugh. No, completely useless to be lectured about it. Stupid way to teach computer art.

It is so weird you mention this, because I have had a Sam/Jack western plot bunny rolling around in my head for ages.

With bandits! And guns! And horses! And UST!

(Okay, I might be slightly too in love with this idea).

And they've travelled through time before, so that's the excuse hand-waved. *g*
