For anyone who - like me, yesterday - saw the "Gordon Brown steps down!" headlines and thought, wow, have we got a new PM then? They missed out a few words: "Gordon Brown has [said he will] steps down [as leader of the Labour Party, by September]." So he's still in post as PM at the moment - as he's supposed to be, until it's decided.

Basically, this seems to be because one of the main blocks to a Labour-Lib Dem coalition is Brown himself, because a lot of Lib Dems don't want him as PM. Brown is taking the hit in order to keep his party in power - and really, given that leaders who lose an election rarely stay leaders for long, he had nothing to lose. He possibly gets a few more months as PM, and his party will like him better if he keeps them in power, so when he steps down as leader he could still be rewarded with a Cabinet post (he was actually faaaaairly popular when he was Chancellor; people believe those clichés about dour Scotsmen).

Anyhow, it's all quite exciting. I have the BBC Live Updates open in another tab and they tell me that everyone's gathering in the House of Commons. Whether it's because a decision has been made or because they're just, you know, working is anyone's guess. Tories (including that dickhead, Boris Johnson) keep releasing huffy statements, though, which leads one to speculate...

Quote that amused me most this morning: The Lib Dem leader has a "string of Westminster meetings" today, according to his aide. "Nick Clegg is not the only person involved."
