*cries* Valhalla (Stargate novel #14), you are keeeeeeeeeeeelling me!

I keep trying, I do, but you are just so mind-numbingly dull. I just don't want to read 2½ pages (two and a half!) of Jonas walking into a room. I do not need a description of the security scanner, how he built the security scanner, his plans to fix the speed with which the door closes, the people in the room, what the people have in front of them (laptops, papers, writing instruments, and "beverage mugs", apparently - how "beverage mugs" differ from just plain mugs, aside from in the lengthiness of their name, I don't know), what the people are wearing, the walls, the size of the table, and the colour and construction of the frickin' floor tiles.

The floor tiles were the last straw. I don't care how many Vikings you may contain, I'm not convinced much will happen with them except a lengthy description of their clothing, their eating habits, their relationships with one another, their weaponry, their fighting styles, the surrounding vegetation, the ground, the sky, &c. &c.

I'm sorry, Valhalla; I am skim-reading you.

ETA (not crossposting to LJ atm, because I don't know if it's posting new versions of the same thing, or just updating the old one): I want to share more of the pain. The tiles are "a bland gray that reminded Jonas of an Earth breakfast food called oatmeal, for which he'd never managed to develop a taste."

Seriously. If I actually needed to know about the tiles – and I would strenuously argue that I don't – couldn't they just be gray? Does gray really need to be qualified as "bland"? Are there some exciting shades of gray out there? And do they not have anything on Langara to which the gray of the floor tiles could be compared? Do they not grow cereal crops? What do they eat for breakfast on Langara, anyway? Bacon? Is this the secret of Jonas's "quick study" abilities?
