*cries* Valhalla (Stargate novel #14), you are keeeeeeeeeeeelling me!

I keep trying, I do, but you are just so mind-numbingly dull. I just don't want to read 2½ pages (two and a half!) of Jonas walking into a room. I do not need a description of the security scanner, how he built the security scanner, his plans to fix the speed with which the door closes, the people in the room, what the people have in front of them (laptops, papers, writing instruments, and "beverage mugs", apparently - how "beverage mugs" differ from just plain mugs, aside from in the lengthiness of their name, I don't know), what the people are wearing, the walls, the size of the table, and the colour and construction of the frickin' floor tiles.

The floor tiles were the last straw. I don't care how many Vikings you may contain, I'm not convinced much will happen with them except a lengthy description of their clothing, their eating habits, their relationships with one another, their weaponry, their fighting styles, the surrounding vegetation, the ground, the sky, &c. &c.

I'm sorry, Valhalla; I am skim-reading you.

ETA (not crossposting to LJ atm, because I don't know if it's posting new versions of the same thing, or just updating the old one): I want to share more of the pain. The tiles are "a bland gray that reminded Jonas of an Earth breakfast food called oatmeal, for which he'd never managed to develop a taste."

Seriously. If I actually needed to know about the tiles – and I would strenuously argue that I don't – couldn't they just be gray? Does gray really need to be qualified as "bland"? Are there some exciting shades of gray out there? And do they not have anything on Langara to which the gray of the floor tiles could be compared? Do they not grow cereal crops? What do they eat for breakfast on Langara, anyway? Bacon? Is this the secret of Jonas's "quick study" abilities?

Hydra... I did read it, but I can't... oh! The one with all the SG-1 robots? I got too confused. :D I liked the idea, but I needed to see it done visually, and colour-coded or something.

Also, in my experience, oatmeal is usually a shade of brown, like tan or you know "oat colo(u)red".

Yeah, it's not quite grey, is it? More biscuit-y. Grey would be quite disturbing, as a breakfast cereal colour.

Now I have cravings for biscuits, darn it.

Although I'm thinking my kind of biscuits...don't your kind of biscuits come in different colors? Or are "biscuit" cookies, a type of cookie, like shortbread or something?

Do you call a chocolate chip cookie a biscuit? Oatmeal...and now we're back to the colour of oats again.

Oh, well, I think of 'biscuit' as a colour, generally the colour of ordinary chocolate chip cookie dough. Technically, yes, it's not really good as a description (particularly across international borders *g*), but in the UK, 'biscuit' is quite often used as as a name for that particular colour.

I think of biscuits as the generic term for any type of... biscuit..., and cookies as a more specific sub-group - the sort that are usually chocolate chip, or oatmeal and raisin, or such.

Mmm. Want biscuits, now. My sort of biscuits, that is. :D

Gray? Really? Oh, dear. I just told Aurora I was thinking oatmeal was beige--it's not *entirely* appetizing on its own, but it's certainly better than grey.

Of course in this novel's world, there are more than one kind of mug. Who knows what colors exist.

Or maybe it's some kind of Langaran thing. It shows Jonas is alien because he's seeing things in different colors. Wooo. Spooky!

Ah, yes - they have beverage mugs, and... other mugs. Soup? Casserole? Who knows.

Or maybe the oatmeal at the SGC is REALLY bad.

Although Jack seemed to enjoy it.

True. It was disgustingly gloppy, but unless my tv colors are off, it wasn't grey.

I have to admit I like my oatmeal on the gloppy side. But I need fruit and stuff in it.

I was kind of revolted that Jack's oatmeal could apparently stick to his spoon in a huge mass. Ew. I like mine with more liquid than that.
