In a Friday state of mind

pepper: Cup of tea (Tea)
Curse you, everyone who recommended the Vorkorsigan books to me! I get no sleep, because I keep staying up late reading the damn things. I think, "I'll just read for five minutes before I go to sleep..." but before I know it, it's half-past one. Annoyingly, today I reached the final chapter (of Memory) just as my bus arrived at work. Despite reading it on the walk between my bus stop to the office (no, not crossing any major roads), I didn't finish. Now I want to just duck into a closet and finish reading it, but I really can't. I'm going to have to wait until lunchtime. Which is nearly an HOUR away. It's not faaaaaaaaaaair.

Also, I read a fic the other day which totally made me think that the writer had been reading Lois McMasters Bujold. But in a good way - and subtle enough that I may be mistaken. I don't think I'd have seen it if I hadn't just read it, myself.

Lucinda Williams CD has arrived, woohoo! It is lovely (so far, I like it a lot more than West - particularly the song Honey Bee *hearts her accent*). But Sapphire and Steel, allegedly dispatched at the same time, hasn't turned up yet. Has it disappeared en route? Where are my medium atomic weight agents? Okay, it said 3-5 days delivery, so it's not technically late yet... but still.

Um... more of this inane drivel later, when I think of it.

I hear ya...

**WARNING**

I *think* the following happened in a short story before "Memory", but I could be wrong, and I don't want to spoil you - unless you want to be spoiled.

...she was my favourite author for a time, after reading "Shards of Honor", "Barrayar" and "Young Miles". I gradually lost interest in the series, though, right around the time Miles was cheating on Ellie Quinn w/ Taura. I'm just funny about fidelity that way. I did read a bit later where he finally got married and seemed happy, but I think I missed some stuff along the way and perhaps after.

Meh. I still like the beginning books quite a bit, though.

Re: I hear ya...
I did read about that in 'Memory', although it sounded like it had started beforehand (I've not got all of the books, so I'm reading them a little bit piecemeal). Yeah, it wasn't his noblest hour. But Ellie didn't seem especially heartbroken about it, OTOH.

I need to read the bits where he and Ellie get together, really, because I don't have much of a feel for their relationship.

yeah...
...all I really remember was his thought that since his sleeping with Taura pre-dated his relationship with Ellie (I do believe that was the term he used..."pre-dated"), it didn't really count as cheating. Addtionally, Ellie had turned down his marriage proposals repeatedly.

Whatever. All cheating seems to be about justification for the cheater. It's funny, because often that's pretty much my ONE hot button issue when reading fiction, and it's amazing that *so many* characters are unable doing that one thing. *sigh*

Oh, btw...I'm thinking about a couple of months from now, and I've decided to volunteer at the Hillingdon RSPCA during the daytime when Paul's at work. However, if you've got any time off on December 26, 29, 30, 31, or January 2nd, I could certainly take a trip out to Oxford, if you're still interested. There's a bus that apparently goes right out there, and stops in Uxbridge. I don't know what your schedule's like, though. You might end up working those same days that I'd be available b/c Paul's at work, lol.

But just let me know whenever...then I'll fill out my volunteer application and send it in.

:)

er...
Unable to *avoid* doing that one thing, that was meant to be.

Re: yeah...
Oh, yes, please do come visit! Um, I'm not sure exactly when I'll be free - I'm currently applying for a job, and if I get it, I'd probably have started there by then. But I doubt they'll be open over Christmas (it's at a college), and if I'm still where I am now, they're definitely closed for the hols, so pretty much any of those days is fine with me. Oh, except for the 26th, when I'm likely to be visited by relatives. :)

(And I went all the way back to Victoria and caught the damn bus to Oxford, and about 45mins into the journey it passed through Uxbridge - I hadn't noticed on the way in. Dammit.)

d'oh!
That figures.

And cool. Wanna shoot for the 29th, then? That's right in the middle of the two holidays so hopefully it wouldn't be inconveniencing you, and that way I can just leave that one day off of my volunteer application. And if it doesn't work out for some reason, I'm sure I can go ride the tube all day or something, instead. *g*
