Stargate book club

Much yayness for Do No Harm. Admittedly I'm only on page 54, but it is very... grown-up and thinky and interesting, so far. Plus Janet called Jack the cuddly mascot of the Tough Love Club, and there's a very interesting back-story for Dave Dixon (was he really only in Heroes? I could've sworn he was in more eps). Good stuff.

Whilst I'm on the subject of Stargate books...

More backstory in Siren Song - that's what I love about the books. Interesting stuff about Aris Boch, although... maybe it's just me, but I felt that they made him too clearly one of the Good Guys. I liked his ambiguity in Deadman's Switch, never really knowing what his true history was - kind of like Vala. And I was slightly dubious about the plot - Ancients can't destroy this monster, but they can lock it in a mountain and engineer people to guard it? I swear I'm not trying to be contrary, orca_girl! :) I did enjoy the journey, however, and I liked the uncertainty of the ending. Perhaps it's just that my expectations were too high. 

On the other hand, I really didn't have high expectations for Trial By Fire... and really enjoyed it. :) I'm totally in the minority here, I know - but aside from a few niggles (did they have to make it clear, with every single line she spoke, that OFC was British? Ye gods. No one speaks like that. But when they relaxed with that a bit, it was better), it was entertaining, completely undemanding, and had some fun running around in costumes. Plus, it gave me the great mental image of Jack naked and covered in honey. Little things please little minds. *g* I read it when I was coming down with a cold, and it helped me survive a couple of endless journeys home from work.

Okay, now I'm going to have to track this book down just for that. I loved Dixon. And, yep, we sadly only got one episode with him. But man he was fun. *g*

Yeah, I've only read a bit, but it's shaping up to be quite the Jack-and-Dave bonding fest. With heaps of Janet. Minor character heaven.

Okay, if if Dixon was in the book I have to get. Unfortunately, our bookstores really suck and don't carry any of the stargate novels. I have a list of books I need to order.

Yeah, Dixon was in Heroes. I think he was supposed to be a recurring character instead of Colonel Reynolds, but Adam Baldwin had a conflicting schedule. It makes sad because I totally love Adam in almost anything. They should bring him back in a future Statgate movie.

Ah, it's such a pity he wasn't in more of it. He had a nicely abrasive attitude. And it felt like he and Jack had some familiarity with one another - which is what this book is going to fill in, I guess. Still, Reynolds is good, too.

I have a really good bookstore, but they didn't have this one. It seemed to disappear, the moment it was released. *shrug* Still, ordered online, second-hand, they're sometimes much cheaper.

oohoohooh! I just picked up Do No Harm so I'd love to read it with you :)

also, I did already start reading Blood Ties SGA. At two chapters in, we start with a bit of FBI profiler stuff (other character in story) and Atlantis stuff and then (here's why I bought it) the reason the story becomes John and Daniel working together.

As Pepper said, I'm also reading it (though I finished it last night, I gobbled it up fast and I'm sure it could do with a second read to get all the details!)

I should tell you that I finally finished Baroque of Heaven while I was commuting.

The Daniel stuff did become just a bit tiresome, didn't it? But in a lot of ways, it was a fun romp.

Yay! Yeah, the Daniel stuff was okay at first, but it escalated. I rebelled when I reached the bit when a squad of Jaffa were beating up Jack, and then one of them punched Daniel in the stomach - and everyone fusses over Daniel. I mean, I understand that a punch to the stomach can be very dangerous... but what, they pulled their punches with Jack? The worry seemed disproportionately Daniel-centric. :) But mostly I enjoyed it.

Yayness indeed - I thought it was very good. Occasionally obviously written by an ex-SG-fanfic author (not to mention the massive Medical Considerations flavour) but all in all, good stuff. Angst! Drama! And Jack and Janet interaction, which is totally my thing. Dixon is awesome, and it ties nicely into Nemesis too. I won't say no more cos you ain't finished...

I am also reading Do No Harm and am about halfway through. Them darn grad school summer classes are getting in the way of my way more interesting recreational reading. I am thoroughly enjoying it and of course inserting all my own J/D subtext. Much fun!

Okay, I just finished Trial by Fire, and THANK YOU for sending that to me, because it was totally cracky and awesome. The only thing that drove me crazy is that I couldn't believe that they wouldn't have gotten Miss Marple over her disbelief before letting her walk through the 'gate. And, you know, giving her a few lessons in alien culture. Bah. But I actually enjoyed the plot, although I called that Culture A (well, the priests, anyway) were the bad guys from the start. Yeah.

Hoorah! Yes to your points about the OFC (who I would happily have throttled for about the first third of the book), and yeah, it follows the Stargate tradition of Obviously Evil Aliens That Our Heroes Think Are Good. But Jack and Daniel got to work out some Abyss issues, Jack coped on his own with the wacky alien culture, and the others worked things out from the other end (and Sam had a great little "I am woman, hear me roar!" bit). I loved Jack's worry that, oh god, please don't let that have been Carter's plan that killed all those people.

I'm just sad that they passed up an opportunity to have Jack naked and covered in honey. *g*

Yes. Despite the OFC of annoying doomosity, the book was surprisingly Stargate-y. I liked the work-through of Abyss issues, and I liked the whole rockslide bit and Jack's reaction to it--and Sam's reaction to that reaction. :-)

Having Jack naked and covered in honey tree sap is your area of expertise... and more fun when it doesn't have to be canon-compliant. :-D
