pepper: Pepperpot (Easily Amoosed)

Oh, Monday...

Dudes. I'm so glad the main wave of Ark of Truth reviews is (surely) over. It's not so much the avoiding of spoilers - I'm admiring how thorough everyone is being with that, by the way – but just that you've all been talking about that, and I'm booooooooooored! I have nothing to read! Bah. *is self-centred and should probably not spend so much time pressing refresh on lj anyway*

I have some plastic moulds for making my own Easter Eggs, which is fun and extremely messy (there is no 'but' in that sentence). Oh, and I learnt something about eggs and bunnies, from Bill Oddie. People used to think that hares laid eggs, apparently, because of a bird that lays its eggs in hollows in fields. The hares use the hollows to hide in, lying flat against the ground. When someone is coming their way, they pop up - as if by magic - and when the person looks at where they were, there's some eggs. I don't know if that's exactly where the Easter Bunny comes from, but it's not quite as random a connection as you might think.

I found a 14-year-old Bryan Adams (yeah, yeah) gig T-shirt the other day, packed away in a box with the blanket my Great Aunt knitted me to keep me warm at college, and other assorted bits and pieces. It says, in foot-high yellow digits, "69", and underneath, smaller, "JUST DO IT". Referring, of course, to the song, Summer of '69 (riiiiight). I love it dearly, but I wasn't brave enough to wear it in public when I was sixteen, and it turns out I'm still not brave enough now.

I was thinking the other day, whilst watching The Return pts 1 and 2 because I've now bought season 3 of Atlantis and no I haven't watched all of season 1 or bought season 2 yet and yes I'm pathetic, that Torri Higginson is rather RDA's type. I wondered whether that had anything to do with the chemistry between the two characters, or whether it was just the situations they were in (particularly in The Real World - and is it wrong that I find Evil Jack terribly sexy?). And I was thinking about something I read, that he thought that Jack had partners on and off throughout the series, and thinking that would make an interesting series of ficlets, and that Elizabeth could be one of them. Except that just after they met he was frozen in stasis, and then when he was revived she went off to a different galaxy, and my personal canon is that he's with Sam after Threads or thereabouts. But still. And also it should involve his poker nights with the local sheriff, Andy.

Speaking of things that are keeping me amused, A bought himself a Wii this weekend, finally (he's been talking about it for ages). The invisible tennis is the most fun as a spectator sport - watching A rather than the screen. I feel that the geekishness of my life has risen a few points. Oh, and you can design yourself a Mii, which wanders about the place and does... stuff, I'm not clear on that part. Anyhow, I made one - tall and tanned, with messy grey hair, a crooked smile, black eyes and dark glasses. He's called Angus, and he waves his tiny little arms and legs furiously when you pick him up. A wasn't fooled for a second – I might just as well have called him Jack and been done with it. It's lucky we're so tolerant of one another's foibles. :)

(And yes, I'm thinking of making the whole team, if A lets me.)

There was a lovely story set after the Lost City where Jack and blonde!Weir were dating with a bit of S/J UST. Unfortunately, I can't remember the title or author. I'll have to poke around for it a bit.

I never much cared for Torri Higginson's portrayal of Weir. I must preferred Jessica Steen. In my head I can never seem to reconcile them being the same character. I'm sure it has a good deal with how she was written on Atlantis as much as the actresses performance.

Anyway, since I can't seem to see them as the same character, I thought Jack would go for Blonde!Weir rather than Brunette!Weir. Blonde!Weir seemed to have a much greater sense of humor than Brunette!Weir. I think a sense of humor is tremendously important when it comes to Jack, not to mention he seems to have a thing for blondes. ; )

Ah, to each their own.

I'm kind of projecting RDA's very definite type on to Jack, which isn't canon by any means - or even personal canon, as obviously I have my stupid-cute OTP. :) But I kind of liked them together in The Real World, and it felt like she knew him enough to know how he'd act.

I dunno, I don't have a problem with the change, myself (I blame years of Doctor Who and James Bond - "So they look totally different, but they're actually the same person? Okay!"), so all the stuff that happens at the end of S7 I just mentally add on to Liz's character as a whole. Yeah, I definitely agree that a sense of humour would be vitally important to him.

[identity profile] vickyocean.livejournal.com 2008-03-17 02:37 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not that they look different that I can't reconcile them into one character. Like your example of James Bond, I have no problem with changing actors (we won't get into who's the best Bond). The two Weir's just seem vastly different to me personality wise. I sorta went through the same thing with McKay on Atlantis. The writers seemed to tweak his personality to make him much more 'OMG flail-ly' than he appeared on SG-1. I was watching Redemption the other day and I was sorta surprised at how cool headed he seemed after watching him freak out so much on Atlantis.

I didn't care for the Real World quite so much as I did The Return. Freaked out Woolsey and irritated Jack were entertaining. Though on a whole I was rather irritated by the fact that the Atlantis people were more interested in saving the city than saving Jack and Woolsey. If it had been SG-1 they'd have been more concerned by the people.

[identity profile] pepper-field.livejournal.com 2008-03-17 05:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, well I've not watched all that much Atlantis. Then again, I've probably seen more of brunette Weir, even with the few eps I've seen. I can see differences in how they played her, yes - I guess because they had more of a long-term picture in mind, once they began Atlantis, and I guess TH would have had some input into how she wanted to play her. Still, I see similarities, too - the silent listening to the arguing between Kinsey and O'Neill, that seems to be something they'd both do. Ah, anyhow - for whatever reason, it just doesn't bug me, and for that I'm grateful. :)

And, well, they were a little concerned about Jack and Woolsey - but the city probably has more of an emotional connection for them. They've spilled blood for it, etc etc - they were all feeling like they'd been kicked out of their home. If it had been SG-1, they'd definitely be much more concerned about Jack (and to a lesser extent Woolsey) than Atlantis - but it's a different setup for them. Less investment in place.

*is playing Devil's Advocate today*

[identity profile] vickyocean.livejournal.com 2008-03-17 06:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Damn you, Devil's Advocate! I deal with enough lawyers at work!. ; )

Hmm, I understand your point about the Atlantis crew being emotionally invested in the place. I mean Weir was still running around Earth in a red shirt, FCOL. Maybe because I'm a much bigger fan of SG-1 I was a little irate about the 'let's take our city back and oh, yeah, if we happen to get a chance we'll rescue General O'Neill and that annoying twit Woolsey'.

Perhaps that kind of attitude is why I don't really dig Atlantis as much as SG-1. SG-1 as a team was much more concerned with the 'human' aspect when making they're decisions about how to proceed. The Atlantis team often seems to run rough shod over people if it suits their purposes. I get the feeling that anyone who's not part of the Atlantis crew isn't considered one of 'their people' and they could almost care less, where as the SGC is sort of the opposite.

Oddly, I did start a series of ficlets when I first saw The Return to handwave away their greater concern for the city rather than the man that gave them the opportunity to go to the city in the first place. I should really finish that one day. : )

*nods emphatically*
Aside from Sara, Elizabeth is actually the only person I really pair Jack with (and, actually, hm, Jack is the only person I can pair Elizabeth with. Interesting. Well, not quite true. I wrote her with Daniel once. I just can't write her with people from SGA).

I don't quite know what it is about Jack and Elizabeth for me, but somehow in my mind they REALLY work together.

(also, I love the hug she surprises him with at the end of Return 2)

[identity profile] pepper-field.livejournal.com 2008-03-17 02:20 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a very cute hug. She's all "I got Atlantis back! Whee!" I found her reaction to losing Atlantis very interesting - I guess a part of it was her waiting to see whether she was going to wake up again. She didn't quite believe it was real, because she'd kind of been there and done that.

I don't know whether I'm predisposed to like them because you (and others) have squeed about them... No, actually, I don't think it's that - I just liked them in The Real World. I liked casual!Washington!Jack, checking up on her, and being kind of protective of her stability, but also pushing her limits a bit, and... it was interesting.

I was playing with my friend's Wii this weekend! And K and I made our own Mii's. They're the characters you can play for the game, and apparently you can do a fitness test and up your levels. According to my friends, if you score high enough in bowling to achieve pro status, you get a little star on your bowling ball. Heh.

Tennis is insanely funny to watch people waving their arms trying to hit an invisible ball (and/or fighting with the sensor seeing your motion, heh).

Oh, yes, I forgot about that - yes, I made a Mii that looked like me, and tried out the tennis, briefly. Very fun. It's amazing that it knows when you're hitting forehand or backhand.

And, well, when wave 2 of the Ark of Truth squee hits at the end of April, I shall be surfing it. :)

I'm bored with very little work to do while the boss is away.

I could ship Jack/Elizabeth on Stargate. I can see them as having a past that no one really knows about because it was one of his secret black ops that went bad and she had to do to political battle to help get him out but it was all very downlow.

Perhaps she was a fresh young thing just out of school working for someone in Washington, she assisted with getting him out of trouble and they had a brief summer fling. He would check in on her because she was a good 'kid' and he was happy to see her doing so well.

and yeah Evil Jack is sexy.

What about shipping Macgyver with Elizabeth?

*groans, collapses* Maybe someday - when I have like a kabillion hours of free time. *g*

I've been trying to remember whether they indicate definitely that Jack and Liz don't know one another before Lost City. I can't recall offhand. I might have to do some research (watch Stargate, oh, the hardship).
ext_2207: (Default)

[identity profile] abyssinia4077.livejournal.com 2008-03-17 05:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, in Lost City (I watched last week) they don't appear to. Daniel volunteers info about who she is, none of the others appear to have heard of her.

Of course, with Jack, that doesn't mean squat.

[identity profile] pepper-field.livejournal.com 2008-03-17 05:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah - I thought it'd be something like that. They usually don't bother with too much backstory, unless absolutely necessary. But I like them better as older, myself. Coffee and morning papers and stuff. I just sat in a long meeting, thinking about it. :)

[identity profile] supplyship.livejournal.com 2008-03-17 04:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm booooooooooored! I have nothing to read!

Sorry, sorry! I'm all done w/AoT now and will try to post some interesting things. :D

I really liked the Jack-Elizabeth dynamic in The Real World. I thought both actors did a nice job either creating chemistry or capitalizing on the chemistry they already had.

I remember reading a couple good fics with the J/E pairing that were pretty decent... I'll have to find those again. It is a totally plausible pairing - and certainly, when they would have met at the end of Season 7/beginning of Season 8, Sam would have still been unavailable to Jack. And after his close brush with death, I'm sure he thought about moving his love life in new directions.

I should think so, too! ;) Aw, I don't begrudge the squee, it's just it's been a bit quiet around here, scrolling past all the cuts in my flist.

If you find those fics, let me know! I think they could just about manage a fling between Jack being revived and Liz flying off to Atlantis, but I don't feel there's much more time in there. I need to watch Atlantis some more, though - I'm not clear on how often people can schlep back and forth, and at what points breakthroughs in technology are made, all that sort of stuff.

I'm going to bring all my geekiest and most obscure T-shirts, and see if anyone gets them.

And you didn't think about making a Wii Jack? I'm shocked at you! ;) Actually, I was looking at the hair options and thinking some of them would be perfect for Sheppard - only trouble is, I'm simply not interested in making a Wii Sheppard.

It'd be hilarious, though, if you had a Wii that was co-owned and sharply divided as to the superiority of the Stargates. So you'd have an SG team and an Atlantas team. :-)

I'm actually a big fan of Jack/Elizabeth, though I don't say it too often or too loudly for fear of being hit with sticks. ;)

I definitely thought Elizabeth was being rather flirty with Jack in "New Order" when she was telling him he would be the new SGC Commander. That or Tori Higginson was suddenly remembering the crush she used to have on MacGyver (I'm speculating). And I really liked them together in The Real World (Evil!Jack was kind of sexy) and The Return. I like that they have complimentary strengths and are more or less equals. I think they'd end up being really fun together because he's outwardly goofy and inwardly geeky and she's outwardly geeky and inwardly goofy.

I like your idea for a series of ficlets, I love the idea of Jack having a personal life outside the SGC, the rest of the team seemed to have them in those later seasons, and of Weir being with someone other than Simon, never liked him for her.

I'm so jealous of your Wii, they are so hard to find here. Maybe in a few months.
ext_3314: Woman writing (Default)

[identity profile] pepper-field.livejournal.com 2008-03-20 03:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Is liking Jack/Elizabeth a bad thing, then? I'm blithely uncaring about this stuff. :) Heh, to Torri having a crush on MacGyver. Well, it's perfectly possible.

Yeah, they do have kind of equal status - I like that about their relationship (I like that Sam and Jack have to work out their inequality, too). She was kind of his boss, and then he's kind of her boss - but because he's in the military and she's civilian, who is boss of whom doesn't have quite as much impact.

I'm tempted to put together one of those damn tables, and write a different aspect of Jack's personal life for each one. I'm also convinced that I'd never finish something like that, and people would end up coming after me with torches and pitchforks...

Yeah, the Wiis were impossible to find here, too - they've just released a new batch, I think, because suddenly all the shops have "Now in!" posters up. I'm not into gaming, but it does look like the most fun of the current lot. And it's surprisingly tiny. Tiny!

[identity profile] rihansu.livejournal.com 2008-03-21 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
It's not so much that it's a bad thing, I've just gotten a lot of "What the hell are you smoking?" reactions from people who are really into Sam/Jack or Elizabeth/Shep. Which I understand, I like Sam/Jack too (not so much Elizabeth/Shep), I'm just promiscuous when it comes to shipping Jack. ;)

She was kind of his boss, and then he's kind of her boss - but because he's in the military and she's civilian, who is boss of whom doesn't have quite as much impact.

I like that, and because of that they kind of have to drop any pretense and just deal straight with each other. Which is a very compelling situation for these two since they tend to hold themselves apart from other people because of the job. And because Jack is all about pretending to be someone he's not and Elizabeth is all about holding her cards close until she's ready to play her hand.

I'm tempted to put together one of those damn tables, and write a different aspect of Jack's personal life for each one. I'm also convinced that I'd never finish something like that, and people would end up coming after me with torches and pitchforks...

You should, that would be really cool. Not enough people write that kind of fic about Jack. You could start small and expand as you have the time or the inspiration. And *pffft* if people give you grief about it. :)

I'm so not into most gaming, especially all the first person shooter type games, probably because I'm terrible at them and I just end up mashing buttons randomly and walking into walks. Waving the controller around like a crazy person, that's a little more my speed.
