Okay, getting less funny. Whispering phone creep is back (just past 5pm here). "Hello gorgeous. How are you today?" I didn't answer (really couldn't think of what to say), just left the line open in case he said anything by which I could identify him (the idea that I might know him is the most creepy). He said, "Hello?", like he was expecting me to answer (!), then hung around in silence for about 10 seconds, bit of rustling, and then he hung up.
Police weren't especially helpful - just advised me to change my phone number. Which I am going to do - getting a new one this weekend. Ugh, though. I'll report this call, too. Steadily less amused by this.
ETA: Just so you don't think I'm freaking out / being murdered - I'm going to be incommunicado over the next few evenings, because my computer is being repaired (I'm borrowing the bf's computer to post this). I am still going to be online at work, so I'm not vanishing altogether - but it occurred to me that to post the above and then be uncharacteristically quiet might be a bit worrisome. :)

They also said not to worry - that it's unlikely to be serious. And to be honest, it's just been a few calls, so it's probably fine. Just a creep.

Gah.
I hope he goes away when you change numbers.

It is frustrating - but I guess there's probably a lot of this sort of crap, so they can't put resources into following every one up.

Hmm how about an answer phone with a robotic voice message that says "you are now being connected to a high cost phone line. If you did not request this transfer hang up now."

I think I will change my answerphone message, too.

Not to freak you out or anything, but please be extra cautious when out by yourself. An annoying bastard might also be a dangerous bastard. We want you safe. : )

I'm glad you're changing the number though and I hope it's not someone you know. *hugs*

I really hope it's no one I know. I don't think it is, though - not from what I can tell. I spent a few paranoiac minutes thinking about it, but really couldn't think of anyone who might.

Oh, wait, they don't actually exist... Drat.
Well, hopefully he'll go away when you change numbers. Stay safe. *hugs*

Yeah, I think it's most likely he will. I shan't freak out about it until necessary.

Yay for a new phone! Almost worth the trouble of getting a new phone number.
(Also, I'm sorry if I might have gone a trifle overboard on my loathing of the books today. I have had chronic foot-in-mouth syndrome all day, resulting in me saying things that just...argh. Anyway--I should probably not have been so vehement in that context.)

I'm very much looking forwards to my new phone... whee! :D
And ugh, that's not nice - it would be horrible for it definitely to be someone you know, and to have that worry that they're actually unhinged and going to do something. Scary.

*considers asking anyway*
The funny thing about my almost-stalker was that despite having various e-mail conversations with him (mostly consisting of "Publish my brilliant insightful article that blasts the university for no good reason or be accused of censorship!" and replies of, "We won't publish your article because your writing sucks and you have no idea what you're talking about.") I only met him MAYBE once, and it was before I stopped publishing his stuff.
I always thought that was strange. I mean, it was a small campus.
*shrugs*

Your stalker sounds like one of those people who find themselves away from their parents for the first time, at uni, and who have somehow managed never to develop social skills. We had some of them at my uni, too. Sometimes they really were insane, but mostly they learnt (often the hard way) that they couldn't act like that. It's not nice to be on the receiving end, not knowing if they're merely an asshole, or someone who is genuinely unhinged. Ugh.

Ah. Good call.
I just don't know how certain people get let out of the house.

*hugs you*

But now I'm using new special CreepBeGone(TM) spray. "Remember: when guys you don't know suddenly start acting on impulse - use CreepBeGone Spray! Now with added ninjas."
