Holiday wishes, other stuff

Oh, what a lovely idea...

Right, my ten holiday wishes:

1) Sam/Jack fic with lots of angst and heartache, ultimately leading to a happy ending.

2) Sam/Jack space pirate fic, with Vala and Teal'c and Daniel and Cam too. And Janet. And, hell, Jonas. And Hammond. And Walter. And and and... yeah. Perhaps not everyone on the whole show ever, but I think Sam, Vala and Janet would be kick ass space pirates, if someone can swing it (I miss Janet).

3) Inspiration. Something I can experience that'll make me want to write. I think laterally, and am often kicked off by something unrelated to my fandoms - art, music, theatre, and the like -  so anyone got any recommendations?

4) More SG-1 dolls. In little pirate costumes. (No one said I had to make realistic wishes. But maybe... <looks speculatively at her sewing box>)

5) SG-1 season 9 and 10 on DVD in the UK. Because I've not seen 'em, dammit.

6) A holiday, just me and the bf. Because we've never been on holiday alone, after ten years together. Seriously wrong.

7) An end to religious nihilism, the cynical manipulation of faith for political ends, and the willing suspension of responsibility of those who let themselves be manipulated. "An eye for eye only ends up making the whole world blind."

8) Ditto rich men using politics to make themselves and their business associates richer. It's obscene.

9) Uh, off the serious track... lots of tiny magic fic elves, who can translate the thoughts in my head into a 100,000 story whilst I sleep. Daniel elves for preference - because, well, imagine it.

10) And a bunch of pictures of O'Neill grinning - evilly, cutely, any old way. Because it's my happy place.

In other news... tonight I'm going to go see the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band on their 40th Anniversary tour. Should be fun, I hope.

And I was thinking of something else, what was it...? Oh yes: I've made a series of icons which I can't post completely 'cause I don't have enough userpic space, not having got a paid account, but I may post them to my own website and link them... anyhow, point being they're Jack O'Neill's 11 Rules of Elementary Grammar Usage (as stolen from Strunk and White). And I'm blaming [profile] shinysilvergrl.

That sounds a whole lot less fun than it's supposed to be, now I write it.

Please post on your site...and link! I would love to see some cool icons! Plus, any grammar review would be good for the read-ability of my lj entries!

Will do!

I'll post 'em to my site this weekend... if I get time, anyhow. They're not that useful, grammatically, though, 'cause they don't have the explanation that came with them in the book I stole them from.

Or should that be, "the book from which I stole them"? :)

Crammed the rules on to these pics, I tell ya. Crammed.

http://www.livejournal.com/allpics.bml?user=pepper_field if you want to see the ones I've uploaded to livejournal so far, though. They're not v. good quality, I'm still messing around and learning how to do decent icons.

Oh, you had a journal entry about time travel I was gonna comment on, but wasn't sure if it was a bit old hat by now...?

I can see how they would take up alot of space. And I just read the time travel comment. Interesting idea if you believe in destiny controlled by a higher being/god, then is there only one (destiny)? And if only one, then how could there be a million different possibilities happening at once?

Mmm, it's an interesting concept, time travel. If you believe in One True Destiny, though, you could still maybe believe in alternate realities happening at the same time, but with different destinies. Like a bunch of science experiments running simultaneously, with slightly different ingredients. And time travel, altering the past or the future, would then be like... like jumping to a different reality, rather than altering your own.

Or perhaps your own reality was *predestined* to be altered, and it's only our perception of time being linear, cause followed by effect, that deludes us into thinking anything's changed...

I dunno what I believe, myself - giving up free will and just accepting whatever happens as being predestined isn't really a workable life philosophy, IMO... :)

Right, I suppose if you believe in multiple dimensions and reality than that would translate into a possibly different ultimate being for each, if they are truly seperate realities. I think my thought/assumption would be that an ultimately there was simply one ethereal divine being that was bigger and more whole that transcends all the time and possibility 'destiny' dimensions at once? I do believe in a certain level of control of one's 'destiny' or reality, but part of me believes that each possible dimension is created when you make a choice that could have multiple actions.
Of course ALL of this is just theory. But it's fun to think about. PS. Do you read any of the other sg fanfiction too? I really liked "Incubus". I don't remember who wrote it though, but it was fun.

Time travel hurts my brain. :)

Ooh, SG fanfic yes! I read lots of it. Possibly more than I should. I've not seen Atlantis, so I haven't really read any based on that, but I read some of the SG-1 S/J stuff on ff.net, and Heliopolis, and Gateworld when it's working. I have to limit myself, otherwise I'd never get anything else done. Fanfic has already taken over 97.77427563464 percent of my life. :)

My favourites at the moment are 'Character' by shinysilvergrl, 'String Theory' by annerb, and Rachel500's 'Aftershocks' series. Have you read? I highly recommend 'em all, if not.

'Character' I like because it's got a well-written plot as well as S/J romance, and because it shows why Sam is a good, strong, interesting character, with plenty of guts and grit. There's an actual *point* to the story, too - which is rare, in fanfic.

'String Theory' has some great lines, and is just a pleasure to read. She's got the characters down just perfectly - even though their lives have taken different paths, they're still pretty much the same people underneath. That time travel / alternate universe thing again - Sam and Jack destined for each other, no matter where or when.

'Aftershocks' is just beautifully written, and there's so *much* of it! :) I'm amazed that anyone can write something for every episode, *and* stay within canon, *and* have a plot.

Oh, have you read any of Jojo's stuff? She's so funny! It's a pity she doesn't seem to be writing SG fanfic anymore. Er, where's that link... http://www.fanfiction.net/u/259357/ 'Overwhelming Coolness' made me laugh my socks off.

'Incubus' sounds familiar... can't recall it at the moment... I'll go have a look later.

You're so nice!

And I feel so guilty for putting off the sequel for so long. *G*

No pressure.

[identity profile] pepper-field.livejournal.com 2006-11-27 01:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Really. No pressure at all. You take your time. Finish it whenever. Don't feel guilty. Honestly. Pay no attention to me. Really.

;)

(I'm just playin'.)

I wish I'd kept track of who wrote "Incubus". I think it's one of the mostly humor writers. It's not that old. You'd find it posted within the month. Sam becomes a ghost and spends most of the story trying to get the team, and most importantly JACK (who of course is in an alcoholic funk b/c it was his fault she died) to acknowledge her. God and a beaurocratic Heaven play a role as well.
I read FAR TOO MUCH fan-fic at work. But I'm a receptionist and don't get that much work to start with.

Incubus...

[identity profile] shinysilvergrl.livejournal.com 2006-11-25 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
...was written by Jessa4865 (one of the people on my author alert list), and you can find the fic here: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3154165/1/

er...

[identity profile] shinysilvergrl.livejournal.com 2006-11-25 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)

I guess that *was* my fault, wasn't it? lol. But it was YOUR idea, I only thought it would be cool if there were more of them! ;)
