I have all my fingers and toes crossed.
A couple of days ago, [Poll #1036248]
* Please pick the colour you think I would originally have had, if you picture it as now being grey / white (!!!)
** Feel free not to answer this one, but it is relevant to what I'm curious about, so I'd very much appreciate it. I've locked answers so they can only be seen by me. Again, if it's grey / white, please choose the colour it used to be. And I'm not including all subtleties of colour - please just choose the closest.
*** After I've finished my apocafic, of course. For the WIPs in question, look here and here.

(I like your prompt.)

I have NO IDEA what you look like! (don't really care either...silly me!) Just guessed red to pick something. I saw that others picked brown. Will you be sharing a picture to resolve it for us?
That prompt just kinda came to me...I think of Teal'c and...candles. You'd think muscles would come to mind first!

And I'm starting to see that people don't necessarily have a mental image of other people on lj. I don't, either - but then again, when people have mentioned something about their appearance, my reaction often tends to be 'hm - I wouldn't have guessed that' - you know? It's like... there's not a complete preconception of what someone is, but there's kind of a preconception of what they're not. Or... something.
Sharing a picture... I might. I'm not very fond of putting pics of me up - I prefer to remain an enigma (*g*). But I do have some nice photos from my last holiday...
And Teal'c's muscles look particularly lovely by candlelight. :)

Indeed!

I don't remember a description of her, actually... I imagine she'd look like a grubbier, smaller, more real version of War, actually. And War was red-headed...

And the WIP to work on next isn't ticky boxes! I can only pick one! *is devastated*.
no subject
Yeah, I hadn't thought about that - sometimes we might not have any mental image as specific as hair-colour. I think I picture you as resembling a picture of Eric Idle, I'm afraid. (Not Eric himself, but a picture of him.) Still, could be worse - it could be John Cleese.
And I had a suspicion that, if I put ticky boxes, I'd get people voting for all of them. *is strict* Anyhow, I am going to work on all of them, eventually... I'm just no good at prioritising, so I'm getting you lot to do it for me. :)

Sooo... I'm kind of steamrollered flat?
(A very two dimensional person, that Caladria)
no subject
Absolutely. I'm curious, though, how it works the other way around - whether a preconceived notion of someone's personality affects your idea of their looks.
Not that this poll is really going to tell me much; it's not that scientific. But it's interesting.
And, heh. I think it's a more abstract idea of how you look, though... To me, most people on lj are really a collection of words - a way of phrasing things that is 'them'. Like you said before, to you, I look like snarky fluff.
no subject
I don't know - I think icons are a lot of it as well - not so much the individuals but the style of icons - whether they're pink and fluffy and highly stylised or simpler, ther sense of humour. In a lot of ways I find myself judging people by their icons (and their grammer, though bonus points get given for grammer-icons)
no subject
Yes, there is that, too - I guess we all judge people by the colours they use on their lj, all that stuff. It's all very abstract - nothing to do with how we might expect someone to look.

So have you learnt anything from this except that people want you to write fic?
no subject
Well, it's kind of inconclusive, but it is only a superficial lj poll. I am going to post about it tomorrow. Want to give it a few more hours, see if I can get some Australian votes. :)

Speaking of red hair, I saw an article the other day about how red heads in the UK are discriminated against and are picked on more than people of other hair colors. Have you ever noticed such a phenomenon?
no subject
I'm not so sure about the reality of the red-head discrimination thing. I suspect that it's mostly something cooked up by the tabloid press, to be honest - and ironically, they're the most likely to pick on something like that. Billie Piper's ex-husband, a DJ, is very red-headed, and every tabloid headline about him manages to have some pun on "Ginger".
But in real life? I don't think it's picked on than any other characteristic that makes someone stand out.

As far as ethnocentrism goes, I think I'm not so much ethnocentric and egocentric. People I meet online, fictional characters, anyone I meet that doesn't come with a visual component, I automatically assume to be just like me. For instance, I'm always surprised when I learn that LJ friends are male or live in England or Africa or anywhere other than the US because I am female and live in the US, so obviously it's the same for everyone else. Everyone else also drives old green Hondas and needs glasses in order to read street signs. *shrug* I don't mean to be the center of the universe, I just am.

There's "Other"! I didn't want to put them all - got bored of writing it. :)

And that is exactly what I'm curious about. Because that's what I tend to do, too. Basically, I'm wondering if people will put mirrored answers - that they're blonde and they think I'm blonde, for example.
Notsomuch, so far, as it turns out... Another beautiful theory ruined. :)

And it's always weird meeting a person / seeing a picture of them after you've been communicating with them online for a while. At least for me. Never seems to hit those pre-conceived notions.
no subject
Then again, most people have guessed right. And then again, it's the most common colour, according to the second question.

My natural color is the dullest of browns, but I tend to keep it a deep brown-red color (the box of fake hair-color calls it "chocolate covered cherry").

I love the names they give hair colours. And nail varnish - they give nail varnishes the best names. My current favourite is Titania - a kind of pale, sparkly green, appropriate for the Queen of the Fairies.
