pepper: Pile of old books (Books)

Spent an enjoyable evening at Book Group yesterday, taking Twilight apart. It was worth the pain of reading it, just for the fun of a group rant. One person claimed that his critical faculties may have sustained permanent damage. It was compared unfavourably to Robert Heinlein, John Norman, Tamora Pierce, Anne Rice, Harry Potter...

And yet.

This morning I read this sweet little post, and much though I still hate Twilight and I hope that its fans don't take on the message that a relationship with a controlling, self-loathing, stalkerish man is the epitome of romance, I also identify with their passion for their thing. I, too, have that kind of unreasoning love for my brand of poison. I wouldn't feel comfortable trying to defend Stargate's record on racial issues, I have problems with how they deal with female characters, and I know it's generally as deep as a very shallow puddle. But it's my show, and I love it for its potential, its humour, and its flashes of real heart.

So, I hope you enjoy Eclipse, Twi-hards. Enjoy the zenith of the fannish experience, when your thing is riding the wave of popularity and it seems like everyone is writing fanfic about it, or having passionate arguments about A/B vs. A/C vs. B/C, or posting pictures, or squeeing about the latest news, or making fan art, or writing bad poetry, or finding some other brand new way to engage with and expand on the text. That time when it's The Most Important Thing Ever to find out what brand of cereal your favourite character prefers. I've been there, and will go there again, no doubt, and it's the best feeling.

And read some Tamora Pierce.

Absolutely. As much as I loathe the message that Twilight is selling, I don't feel any sort of animosity toward the fans--and I'm actually somewhat delighted to hear that Eclipse is a good movie... if this thing is going to be so popular, then at least they can get one genuinely good movie out of the package, right?

On the other hand, I'm thrilled that The Last Airbender is bad, because then I don't have to feel bad about turning down invites to go see it.

I've only seen the first Twilight movie, and it was... okay. I mean, I was really hoping it would be laughably bad, because that's always fun--or surprisingly good, because that would be better, but instead it was just kinda... decent. I do, however, plan on seeing Eclipse and am wondering if maybe I should suffer through go ahead and watch New Moon, just to see them all. (This is the same attitude that got me through all four books, and especially Breaking Dawn.)

And hee. I'm now envisioning books with leafy green covers. *g*
