Plants. Oh, and RDA.

So, I'm taking over [livejournal.com profile] rda_daily for April - eep! Well, it's a friendly place, and... I still feel like I should offer my credentials. I am a co-mod for [livejournal.com profile] redial_the_gate (The Light today, woohoo!), and [livejournal.com profile] jacksamfriends (deadline 6 April, OMG!), and... oh, you all know me. *g*

Let's see if I can remember to do this every day for a month. I'm currently managing to keep alive a windowsill-full of strawberry plants (too early for fruit as yet, but they're growing like anything), so I'm fairly confident. Fortunately, if I start talking aloud to the comm, or playing Beethoven to see if it'll encourage growth, no one will actually hear me.

Except A, but he already knows I'm crazy.

---

On the subject of plants, I'm also growing some basil, and a pot of rosemary, but the rosemary is dead, dead, dead, and in fairness I think it was pretty much already gone when I bought it. Despite having killed a fair few plants in my time, I'm actually putting my mind to it at the moment, and am pretty sure I'm doing all the right stuff re. not over/under watering, some but not too much sunlight, big enough pot, etc etc.

I had a huge and beautiful rosemary plant when I was in college, but stupidly I didn't take it with me when I left. It has such a lovely smell. I have a nice recipe for rosemary and cheese mini muffins that taste like they're doing good stuff to your brain, somehow. They only really work with the very fresh stuff, because the dried is so godawful tough.

Mmm...

Yay for [livejournal.com profile] rda_daily! I'd be just a little bit gutted if that comm disappeared!

and I'm very happy that [livejournal.com profile] jacksamfriends isn't due until the 6th! There's no way it would've been finished today! Lol.

Ah, I don't think it'll ever disappear - it could possibly get a bit quieter (and even that's unlikely), but it'll never actually die.

And, oh, I'm glad about the extended deadline, too. *g*

I just bought a bunch of new plants. I expect them to be dead in a few weeks...

My fic is done four little thingy! Whee!

Aw, no! Go into it with a spirit of optimism! THIS TIME, they'll live! That's how I get, every Spring. Despite the historical evidence against me.

Woo! Go you! And have you seen the ones we've got in already? Exciting!

[identity profile] magnavox-23.livejournal.com 2009-03-31 02:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Can rosemary have too much sun? We have some growing here in the full Australian summer sun and it thrives. Come to think of it, they don't take that much water either. Maybe there are different varieties maybe?

Ysy for Strawberries too! XD

[identity profile] pepper-field.livejournal.com 2009-03-31 02:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, no, I think you're right - rosemary likes quite a bit of sun. I put it in a sunny windowsill. But it failed to do anything but get more stick-like and dried. Le sigh. Still, I'm not yet giving up on it...

Mmm, strawberries... I prefer raspberries, but they're not practical in a flat. *g*

[identity profile] magnavox-23.livejournal.com 2009-03-31 02:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Sounds like the Rosemary was sick when you got it hon. That's what happens with alot of the herb saplings sadly. We've managed to nurse a few back to health, but the majority just don't make it.

Strangely enough, I don't think I've ever had raspberries. just plain, fresh raspberries. Must remedy this fact, heh! Your icon is looking quite juicy and delicious. :P

*squints at you* I'm guessing... you've not had raspberries? If not, OMG HAVE RASPBERRIES! They're the best. IMO.

Damn lousy rubbish plant shop...

So...the rosemary's not dead dead, just mostly dead? *g*

[identity profile] pepper-field.livejournal.com 2009-03-31 03:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly! And mostly dead is partly alive... Which is good, because I don't think it'll have much in the way of loose change.

YAY, thank you for taking [livejournal.com profile] rda_daily! You'll do great. *nods*

And gardening, yay! I just wish it didn't still feel like winter here. :(

Hee, well, it's a lovely, friendly comm.

I think I'm much better at keeping plants that offer some kind of reward - strawberries, nice fresh herbs, that sort of thing. Right up until they fail to produce, that is, at which point I lose interest and neglect them. *g*

[identity profile] rihansu.livejournal.com 2009-03-31 04:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I was waffling on whether to buy strawberry plants yesterday at the garden center, but your raspberry icon is making me think I should go back and get some. I keep wanting to turn my mostly unused front porch into a container garden, but fear of killing everything always stops me.

I have a big rosemary plant in my yard, it's a hardy old thing, I've run the lawn mower into many, many times. :)

Apparently strawberries are really easy. Keep 'em watered, give them some sunshine, feed them once a week when they get big enough - it's working for me, and I'm not at all good at this stuff. Of course, I have yet to see fruit, so don't take my word for it...

And, hee - well, I bet it smelled nice when you did that. *g*

[identity profile] rihansu.livejournal.com 2009-03-31 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
It did smell really good, especially combined with the mowed over wild onions in the yard. :)

Heh! Very tasty. *g*

Thank you for taking over [livejournal.com profile] rda_daily for I do love getting a daily dose of incredible hotness. I briefly thought about volunteering and then realized that I have no idea how to do a screen cap and there are days when all I do with the computer is look at it as I go running by, so it's much better that someone with your fan skillz stepped up to the plate.

Sorry about the rosemary. I hope it makes a miraculous recovery. Do you have the recipe for the mini muffins because I'd love to make them. I have a nice rosemary bush out by the well house that I keep just for the smell of the fresh leaves. It's the best aromatherapy there is.

Icon from my days growing parsnips.

Aw, thanks! I have a screencapping habit, you see - I don't know why, except that they've sometimes come in useful for making icons, so this seemed like a good use for them. :)

I'll track down the recipe and post it. That reminds me, there was... some other recipe I was going to post, for someone, a while back... hm...

And yes, it's totally aromatherapy. :)
