(no subject)

Inspired by something [livejournal.com profile] rihansu said, I've been thinking about this show I like. I've read a ton of fanfic about it - a team of government agents, rather maverick, rather prone to operate within their own self-imposed boundaries. They do respect their overall superior, though, who knows how and when to rein them in, and when to let them do their stuff. Because they're very good at what they do.

The team leader is a slightly older man, ex-military, very fierce, very dry wit, who has a tragic history: his wife and child were murdered. He doesn't like to talk about it, and his team will circle the wagons if any outsiders start to probe too deeply (but they don't let their leader know they're doing it). He's very protective of his team. VERY. Despite his antisocial nature, members of the team often seem to turn up at his house.

The rest are a mix of rogues, nerds, experts, crackpots... There's the Casanova who thinks he's irresistible to women (and is often right, to everyone else's annoyance). There's the rather naive computer genius (Casanova takes particular delight in annoying him). There's the one with all the arcane knowledge about everything under the sun - and boy does he like to talk, and talk, and talk about it. There's the small, fierce, odd-looking caffiene addict who just has that secret ingredient that means they're the only one not scared of the team leader - and, somehow, has become his favourite. There's the one who, against the odds, seems to actually be normal, and who can interact sensibly with people-who-aren't-in-the-team. There's the one who, from an outsider's perspective, might look like the odd one out, by dint of their very different and dangerous life prior to joining the team - but who is just as much a part of it as any of the others.

NCIS? No. Magnificent 7.

Except... not the TV series. M7 fandom is unusual in that it has one major AU in which about half the fanfic is set. It's so prevalent that I feel as if I've watched the series, in which the M7 cowboys are modern-day ATF agents. Their leader, Chris, is a former Navy SEAL. Aside from an irksome lack of women, I always thought it would have made an excellent series, and was very frustrated that it would never, ever happen...

But now I have NCIS. :)

I love NCIS -- I just want to hug the entire team

They're lovely, aren't they? They're my happy place. :)

I...actually have no idea what you're talking about in the specifics, but generally? YES. *g*

Heh - yes, well, it's one of those shows/fandoms that appeals to me, so... :)

I don't have time during the week to actually watch when NCIS is on, but my family collects the DVD's so I marathon what I miss when I go home for a break :) I love those characters!

Heh - yes, I'm thinking of getting the DVDs, 'cause I keep missing it, when it's on TV - and it's just so... fun!

I started watching NCIS a couple of months ago and I love it... the whole team works so well together, but Ziva is my particular favorite ;)

Ah, yes, I love Ziva. I think Abby is my favourite. I love that they have more than one strong female character. *basks*

Oh, I vaguely heard about there being a tv series.

Um...I know the movie.

And yes, LOVE NCIS. It's my post-SG1 teamy goodness show. Someday I may even write a *gasp* crossover with that one.

Heh. Well, funnily enough Robert Vaughn is in the TV series of that, too (as well as Hustle - and, of course, the movie). :D

And yes! Please do! That would be a very, very good thing. :)

Wait, do you mean Magnificent Seven, or the Man from UNCLE? Or was Vaughn in the TV series of Seven as well as the movie? That would be cool.

He's in the TV series of M7. He plays Judge Travis, a travelling judge who hires them to be the law in a lawless town out west... etc. :)

Right up to the cut tag I thought you were talking about Stargate.

Hah! Yes, well, my show choices... a little predictable... *g*

I don't watch NCIS but I thought it sounded like Stargate while reading the character descriptions

Heh - well, yes, there's a certain sameness to this type of team show (plus, shows that interest me often are of a certain ilk).

NCIS is gold! Not even Stargate - heck, not even Buffy holds a candle to all the pairings they shower with subtext. Just off the top of my head, I can count at least 15 pairings that seem natural - and makes sense! So... yeah. Gold.

Never did see M7. *ponders tracking it down and watching a few episodes*

M7 itself - the tv show - is... okaaaay. It's not fantastic, and it finished after one and a half seasons, sadly. It's more the fandom that got me hooked - there are some fanficcers who are much, much better than the show itself. But you need to know the characters first, or it doesn't make much sense, so... *shrug* It is fun. :)

I love NCIS :-) It's my team fix after Stargate. My favourite character is Abby. Her total geekness is sheer gold. Of course the show is helped by the fact that it has David McCallum in it :-)

I'm just waiting for the crossover fic with SG1. I want to see Gibbs and Jack face off against each other!

Just gonna butt in here and point out that I've actually read a few Stargate/NCIS crossovers.

Also... there exists several really good Atlantis/NCIS crossovers, plus a few brilliant ones. Because if you think Jack and Gibbs would be fun - how about Gibbs and Sheppard? ROFL

Ah, yes - David McCallum was why I started watching it, really. He's more cuddly than gorgeous, these days, but, well, I used to watch lots of repeats of Man from UNCLE - and then of course there's Sapphire & Steel... *sigh*

[identity profile] rihansu.livejournal.com 2009-02-20 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
This sounds really cool. Other than the lack of chicks this sounds right up my alley.

Would I need to watch the show first to understand it? That's not a deal breaker, I'm almost out of new-to-me NCIS episodes. *cries*

Well, there's actually four women (one's a newspaper owner/editor, one's a bar owner, one's a tough, elderly homesteader, and one's her young niece) - but they're more minor roles. And it's really not the greatest thing ever - the acting is okay, but some of the storylines are terribly cliche. But... some of the fanfic is SO good. Takes the basic characters and really runs with them. :)

You'd proooobably need to watch at least some of the show first, for most of the fanfic. But if you want to give it a try, this one might work without a working knowledge of it: http://blackraptor.net/m7fic-20/inkslingers1.htm

There was one ep in the second season of NCIS, "Meat Puzzle"...

Kate: What did Ducky look like when he was younger?
Gibbs: Illya Kuyakin.

I nearly snorted my soda...

[identity profile] pepper-field.livejournal.com 2009-02-20 10:18 am (UTC)(link)
Hahaha! Excellent! Must watch.

Oh, Illya. You wouldn't believe the amount of stories I have on my harddrive, still unfinished, for Man from UNCLE. Someday...
