I think I'm starting to agree with Dirk Gently on the fundamental interconnectedness of everything. I was watching Sanctuary, and it made me look up Nikola Tesla, because I know very little about him. He lived for a while in Colorado Springs, did you know? See also The Prestige about that. Anyhow, he used to feed pigeons, a reference to which I think was made by Terry Pratchett in his character Leonard of Quirm. There was a biography of Tesla, called Prodigal Genius, the Life of Nikola Tesla, written by John J. O'Neill.

I wonder what the J. stands for.

(ETA: Also, the episode that made me research Tesla finishes in Oxford, which is where I am. *g* ETA2: Actually, that was Rome, wasn't it. But still, they talk about Oxford a lot...)

ETA3:[livejournal.com profile] kirsty841 has pondered what the J stands for, and been inspired...

John J. O'Neill? Two l's too! Heh. The Prestige is a great film, I need to watch that again!

In my head, Jack's "J." stands for James. I don't know why. I got Jonathan James O'Neill in my head and it stuck. Lol.

I'm inclined towards Joseph, myself. Don't know why. :) It could stand for something he's more embarrassed about, though - which is why we never find out...

John Joseph...that works. :)

Awww, poor Jack doesn't like his first or middle name? Hehe. There's fic in here somewhere... *g*

What could it be? Joshua? Jeremy? Jeremiah! Lol. Jonas? heh. Jefferson! lol.

Jefferson! Hee. I like that.

I was inspired!

Oh yeah. There's also the fact that Tesla did a lot of work with *magnets*. :) I studied the man for years [computer science undergrad]; the second he showed up on Sanctuary and they said he was a vamp, my reaction was "that explains SO MUCH!" *g*

Hee. I'm reading about Tesla post having watched Sanctuary, and it just... fits beautifully. :D

Another RDA connection- John De Lancie's character on Legend, Professor Bartok, was based on Tesla.

Tesla is my favorite scientist. 'Death Ray' is all I have to say about that.

Also, I find the whole AC/DC between him and Edison fascinating. Edison is a bastard.

[identity profile] vickyocean.livejournal.com 2009-01-11 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Also, David Bowie as Tesla makes me love both of them more.

[identity profile] orca-girl.livejournal.com 2009-01-11 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
Word. I was so surprised. "Is that... is that David Bowie???" I loved it even more when I found out that he was the first and only choice of the director for that role, and he had to talk Bowie into it.

John De Lancie's character on Legend, Professor Bartok, was based on Tesla.

Hah! Oh, excellent. I will see that series someday.

And doesn't the Vancouver actor pool get just everywhere? Oh, hey, Lorne is on Sanctuary now, too!

In the "Edison is a bastard" category, Tim Powers' "Expiration Date" involves Edison's ghost in kind of a fun way.

hee.

Yay Tesla! He was SO MUCH FUN on Sanctuary, wasn't he? I'm hoping we see him again. (and a big hee :) on the connections)

(and Aurora tells me we keep just missing each other so Hi! *waves*)

Yes, Tesla was good fun! I'm sure there's a lot more stories they could do with him. *is now hooked on Sanctuary*

(Hi! *waves* We'll pass through IM at the same time at some point, I'm sure...)

I just watched "The Prestige" for the first time last weekend (OMG that movie FREAKED ME OUT), and yes, as soon as they got to the Colorado Springs thing, I started thinking "... this really needs to be part of some SG-1 cowboy-era AU or something". Because, Tesla, man! TESLA!

Ooh... I would SO read that... Tesla and SG-1 and cowboys, oh my! *glee*

[identity profile] secretrebel.livejournal.com 2009-01-11 12:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Tesla's pretyy cool. Also pretty weird.

He's also a character in Spider Robinson's Callaghan's series. Which is also cool, and weird. (Although it goes downhill as it proceeds.)

Oh - hah, I'm not surprised. I don't think he's in the ones I've read, but I've not read that far through.

And Sam probably has the Tesla electric roadster on her wish list.

Hee, totally. I was reading about Tesla, and mostly thinking how well he fits into science fiction. *g*
