More MacGyver reviewing.
The Eye of Osiris
I'm half and half on this one. I thought the Indiana Jones ripoff (wow, you weren't kidding about that, were you?) was actually quite fun, although it was never really going to measure up to one of my favourite films of all time, and setting themselves up for the comparison on a fraction of the time and budget was, IMO, a bad idea – Marion Ravenwood* could drink this lot under the table, too. But generally it was nice to have some running around, action, elaborate traps, a few MacGyver-isms (using water and sugar to make the sand imprint solid enough to take a cast was simple and elegant, I thought).
I got a little confused by the Von Leer sibling, because the actor keeps showing up as different characters**, and mostly I think of him as Stepan from season 1 – he's a bit too distinctive to effectively recast as other people.
Alexander's tomb was jolly, although utterly ludicrous and obviously a studio. And they should be ashamed of themselves for conducting archaeology in such a destructive way. Mac isn't trained – "self-taught", apparently (wasn't there talk of a tutor in one of the films...?) – and is naturally inclined to wander into places and fiddle with stuff, but the father and daughter whose names escape me should know better. Even the evil dude – a sapphire as big as your head is all very well, but surely preserving the tomb and staking a claim on the finds would be far more profitable? If you're going to go to all that effort, why not simply fake ownership papers for the land that the tomb is on or something. Or, hell, buy it legally – it'll be worth it in the end.
It was fun hearing RDA say "Anubis" long before Stargate, though. :)
** I hate George Lucas more and more: according to Wikipedia (not the most reliable source, but whatevs), Spielberg wanted Marion to return in Temple of Doom, but Lucas nixed it, wanting Indy to have a different love interest each time. I swear, the man is actively trying to fuck up these films.
** Thinking of which, I watched most of Catwoman this weekend, too, and it was like a Sanctuary cast reunion – except, I think, before Sanctuary. "Hey, it's John... hey, it's Henry!" That old Vancouver casting pool at work again, y/y?
