Redial rewatch: Camelot

Okay, I can't post this to Redial, and sadly we don't have a mirror comm on DW, but hopefully the people who want to know will see this post: the rewatch of Camelot, which was postponed last week, is still taking place this Friday/Saturday.

Details of how to join in are here, and fortunately it won't rely on LJ being back up and working.

Shame I've not been able to post the recap, though. :7 Get well soon, LJ.

Just came across this io9 article on how to get into 20 classic science fiction shows. I like how their advice for Stargate is to watch seasons 2 - 8. *g*

Whilst I agree that those are its prime years and that everyone should watch them, under duress if necessary - as my fiancé will wearily attest, I'm fundamentally incapable of accepting that someone doesn't love a show I love - they say at the beginning that this guide is meant for potential new fans, not people who already love these shows. Either the first couple of seasons grab you, or they don't and you're not going to enjoy the rest. And if you've watched seven seasons, you really might as well watch the other three.

Overall, I prefer season 3 to season 2, but season three opens with the second half of a not especially good two-parter ('Into The Fire'), and then 'Seth', and that's not fair to spring on a newbie. It doesn't get good until 'Fair Game' (and if you don't already know the Goa'uld, the sight of them eating Earth snacks won't be as hilarious as it might be otherwise), and it doesn't have a properly offworld episode* until seven shows in ('Deadman Switch').

Season 2 again starts with the second half of a two-parter - but a much better one, IMO - and is followed by 'In The Line Of Duty' (not one of my personal favourites, but kind of essential later), 'Prisoners', and 'Need'. There are some things in season 2 that a newbie would need to know about - but then again, there's a load of that in season 1.

Eh. I say start with season 1. Trial by fire. If you - you, the theoretical newbie - can handle the stilted scripting and studio-pleasing nekkid gurls of 'Children of the Gods', the horrible linguistic anthropology of 'Emancipation', and the bad science of 'Broca Divide' and 'The First Commandment' and still enjoy all the good things that make it Stargate ("If you don't make it... can I have your stereo?"), then you can handle anything they're going to throw at you later on.

Plus you should watch the original version of COTG, and not the revamp. Otherwise that joke in Moebius makes no sense at all.

Then again, I watched it in this order, IIRC: 4, 3, 7, 1, 2, 6, 5, 8, 9, 10. The only lasting damage was a feeling of disappointment when I discovered that 'Enemies pt 1' didn't exist.

It occurs to me that there's no point whatsoever to this post.

Oh, that reminds me, 'Affinity' is the last episode left unclaimed on the Redial season 8 sign-ups.

* There is 'Learning Curve', but only half of the team is offworld in that, and it's mostly talky stuff.

Today, I bought tickets for a play - something I reallyreally want to go see. A and I always get tickets to something in the new year, you see. Post-holidays, January looks like a long, hard slog, and February even worse, so we need something to brighten our winter.

In previous years we've been to see Return To The Forbidden Planet (space monsters from the Id ftw), The Play What I Wrote (fabulous play about Morecambe and Wise, a little like seeing them live), The Woman In Black (skeeery!), Rock 'n' Roll (highly intellectual and verbose Tom Stoppard play, all about Czechoslovakia and Pink Floyd and the Velvet Revolution), and, last year, The First Emperor (British Museum exhibition about the first emperor of China - Terracotta Army, omg). Plus some other things that I've forgotten, probably. This year, we're not going until well into the Spring, which is sad, but it's something awesome, and it's not on until then. And I can't tell you what it is, because A could read this.

Anyhow, I'm looking forward to it. :)

I've been poking about with my friends filters, because I seemed to have several that basically had the same people in them, and some that were for a short-term purpose only, so if you suddenly have access / don't have access to old posts, you a) probably won't notice, but b) can tell me if you really want to see something or other.

Last night, I dreamed I was the young Charles Dickens. WTF? I don't even like Dickens. Can't I dream about being, I dunno, Louisa May Alcott, instead? Also, I don't think he did live in an orphanage and have adventures.

[ profile] redial_the_gate  rewatch tonight, watching Small Victories, woohoo! The second time in two episodes that Daniel helplessly witnesses his friends effect a last-minute escape using an Asgard beam. Rather stressful for the poor lamb. Still, he's probably given them ulcers, too, with his complete disregard for his own personal safety in the face of Injustice.

Oh my gosh. The Redial sign-ups post is quite an experience. Good times were had! All gone, now. Allll gone. And the rewatch of Nemesis! Is tomorrow! Tomorrow! Time, it does fly.

If you saw ME in a police car, what would you think I got arrested for? Answer me, then post to your own journal and see how many crimes you get accused of.

(Or "for what reason would you think I'd been arrested", and "how many crimes you get accused of committing"... And I think I can guess what the answers will be. *g*)

Awards and... stuff

Yay, congratulations to everyone who won a Stargate Fan Award! Particularly those on my flist: [profile] 6beforelunch, [profile] abyssinia4077, [personal profile] aelfgyfu_mead, [profile] annerbhp, [personal profile] crazedturkey, [profile] kellifer_fic, [personal profile] moonshayde, [personal profile] paian, [personal profile] rowan_d, [personal profile] rydra_wong, [profile] sg_fignewton, and [personal profile] surreallis... holy buckets. I am practicing my gritted-teeth smile and dramatic flounce. ;) Srsly, in the company I was in, I didn't expect to win.

Now you should come and play on the latest [profile] redial_the_gaterecap, for Serpent's Song—an episode that was much more interesting than I remembered. Jack says "Sam?", and is all concerned for her (♥), Teal'c is ultra-menacing and cool and is just beginning to come into his own (the "That time is no more" bit? Ooooh), Janet is strong and ethical and bosses Teal'c around (*waves "Go Janet!" flag*), and for those of you of the Jack/Daniel persuasion, Jack and Daniel get hot and sweaty in the control room.

I can't believe we're nearly at the end of season 2 already. Yikes.

I'm enjoying Siren's Song so far, but I'm so not in the mood for another Daniel-centric story just now. Sigh. Perhaps I should stop reading it until I've distanced myself a bit from the last one.

Aelf, I watch the Willow Is Cute show yesterday. *g* She scared the crap out of Giles by appearing suddenly through a wall, whilst he was spending a relaxing evening card-indexing. It's funny to watch earlier episodes--I keep thinking how much she's going to change, and how completely self-confident she becomes, without the character essentially changing.

pepper: Pepperpot (Sigh)
Meme gakked from [personal profile] holdouttrout - Your Friends Are Not Watching the Same Show You Are (And That's Okay)

Shows I'm watching at the moment:

...You know, just see what [personal profile] holdouttrout said. Particularly the first one. :)

Stargate Atlantis: The Jack Turns Up And Acts Like He Owns The Place Show (extremely rare), and I've caught a few episodes of the Ronon Is Awesome Show.

Doctor Who: The Martha Is Awesome Show (only ran for one season and a couple of specials, but I'm hoping it'll start up again), but mostly the How I Think Rusty Is Doing It Wrong And If I See Another Companion's Family I'm Going To Scream Show.

MacGyver: The How Ridiculous Does RDA's Hair Have To Be Before He Stops Looking Hot? Show. So far I've seen four seasons and the question hasn't been answered yet.

Buffy: The I'm Going To Find Myself Using That Phrase Soon Show, the Willow And Xander Are Just So Cute Show, the Willow And Oz Are Just So Cute Show, the Willow And Tara Are Just So Cute Show, and the Yay Spike Show. Oh, and--very briefly--the Willow And Spike Would Be Just So Cute Show.

Now I'm going to go to watch Serpent's Song (otherwise known as the "Sam and Jack get hot and sweaty in the control room" episode of the Sam And Jack Eyesex Show) for tomorrow's [profile] redial_the_gate.

Title: What A World
Author: Pepper
Wordcount: 776
Rating: Well, hm - let's say PG-13.
Featured Character(s): Teal'c, Jack, Sam, Daniel.
Pairing(s): None
Summary: From the look on Colonel O'Neill's face, Sam and Daniel assumed that the theatre trip hadn't gone well.
A/N: [ profile] redial_the_gate  has hit 200 watchers! *throws party*

I'll get you, my pretty... and your little dog, too! )

I love Big Bang Theory! I'm no good at watching shows once a week, but I'm going to try to remember to catch it. I spent most of the episode giggling like a looney - partly because it was all so weirdly familiar. Although it was sadly lacking in girl geeks, as was mentioned when it first came out.

In other news, I shouldn't be allowed to dress myself. Yesterday, I decided to wear something nice, so I took out a nice skirt I don't often wear – cream-coloured linen, with a kind of asymmetric scrunched effect and a petticoat, kind of old-fashioned sweet. I feel weird wearing dark tops with light bottoms, so I dug out a nice white top. Put it on, looked in the mirror, and realised – OH MY GOD, I look like I'm dressed for a wedding. Suffice to say, I changed quickly into something a little less mad. Roll on summer, when I can wear pale colours without feeling like a freak. Today, I'm dressed like a ladybird. *eyeroll*

What else... People, if any of you are coming to the [profile] redial_the_gate AIM chat tonight (watching Message In A Bottle, w00t!), don't let me hang around afterwards. I have to be at my mum's at 9am tomorrow, to help her move to Worcester (which is a long way away). I cannot stay awake until 3am and also be compos mentis tomorrow, as sadly my aging 30-year-old body doesn't allow it.

Now I must get back to writing the third and fourth instalments of my six-part Sam/Mac commentfic story work.

ETA: Just noticed I've been tagged by [personal profile] aoife_hime. So, 10 things that recently made me happy:

At [profile] redial_the_gate , we're now voting on what episodes to rewatch (i.e. the ones we get together on AIM to watch all at the same time, around the world, and go "Ooh, look at his hair!" about). Go here to vote.

And now for some subliminal advertising for the eps I want (or the two that aren't getting votes, anyhow):

Picspam!  )

ETA: Pics from stargatecaps, with much admiration for and appreciation of their site.

Don't forget that there's a [profile] redial_the_gaterewatch tonight of the first episode of season 2, 'The Serpent's Lair'. Go here for details of times, etc.

And a little thing to keep you entertained for a Friday afternoon...

w00t! My [profile] sg1_by_handfic is finished and gone to beta! *does dance* In fact, for all I know, it's back already - I haven't got access to my email at work (bah). Now I just need to do my [profile] reel_sg1and my [community profile] apocalypse_kreefics, and I'm golden!

...Hmph. Okay, but it's progress. One down, two to go. The Labyrinth fic is about, oh, half finished, I'd say (knock on wood). The apocafic is anyone's guess. Oh, but go read [personal profile] surreallis's apocafic! OMG. *gets teary yet again*

HR here are useless. I have worked in HR, cretins: I know the processes, and I know my managers. Stop trying to bullshit me that it's difficult to get my timesheet authorised. It's not difficult; it's just that you're not trying, because the usual person who does it is on holiday. Keep on doing that, and I won't get paid this week. My empathy as an ex-HR person myself only extends so far. If it's not sorted by mid-afternoon, I'm going to stand behind you and glare at the backs of your heads until you get it done, m'kay? And I have a killer glare. Srsly.

And woo and yay, for [profile] trustno1_reduxis up and running, and there is a very funny recap of the first X-Files episode up for discussion. "That's why they put the I in FBI." *hearts*

Oh, and thinking of such, there's another AIM chat this Friday for [profile] redial_the_gate- rewatching Hathor. After that, there won't be one for about a month (next one up is, I think, TBFTGOG - wow, are we really that far through already?).

ETA: Word's thesaurus suggestion for a search on 'insight'? 'Nearby'. FFS.

Thank you to everyone who joined in with the 'Let's All Watch CoTG And Squee On AIM' yesterday - it was a heck of a lot of fun. That's pretty much the first time I've watched Stargate with anyone - well, with anyone who's actually interested in it, that is.

[profile] abyssinia4077 kindly saved and formatted the chat logs, and although they might make no sense to anyone who wasn't there, you can still go and read them  on [profile] redial_the_gate, in two parts: part 1 and part 2. Apparently the end wordcount was around 25,000, written over about 3hrs. One or two more of those and we'd have a book. Granted, a book that no one would want to read, but a book nevertheless. :)

It will definitely happen again, and a post will go up on redial soon to sort out the finer details, now we have an idea of what's involved. I probably won't play mom every time. It was almost no work to do so - no one misbehaved, it was mostly a matter of inviting people to the chatroom - but the most workable start times for international watching (to include the maximum amount of people) tend to mean me being awake at late hours. I am a night owl, but I try not to make a habit of it. 'Try' being the operative word there.

Well, I feel a longer post is in order, now I have a minute to breathe.

First off, [profile] redial_the_gate . So exiting. A brief calendar of events, 'cause I know there's a lot of posts coming from it (we'll post reminders about all these things, no doubt, but I'm putting it here too for further pimpage):

Tuesday 24th July
: discussion of the Stargate movie
Friday 27th July: watching Children of the Gods and talking on AIM (sign up here)
Tuesday 31st July: discussion of CoTG

Episode discussion and meta will go up every Tuesday (the AIM thing may or may not happen again, depending on how well it goes, and whether I/we have time).

We've already had some wonderful volunteers for doing initial posts and meta on aspects of specific eps, but if you're interested, by all means sign up here

Flying post. I've been busy of late, and am likely to be busy for the next couple of weeks (I'll explain later - lots of rl stuff), but I am lurking, and trying to keep up with the responsibility of modliness for [profile] redial_the_gate(have I mentioned how excited I am about this? I have? Well, consider it mentioned again).
Which reminds me to remind you: don't forget to watch the Stargate movie in preparation for the initial post on Tuesday 24th July. Think of it as homework.
Or... not.

It's a comm!

Hear ye, hear ye...

Announcing the arrival of

[profile] redial_the_gate, a comm in which we're going to rewatch all - yes, all - of the Stargate episodes, including the film. Yes, this will take about four years. What, you had something better to do?

It's still in the stage of being set up, so please step carefully around any exposed cables, wear your hard hat at all times, and don't lean against the paint. It'll be fully operational (fingers crossed) for discussion of the film on Tuesday 24th July, just in time for the 10th anniversary of the debut of Stargate: SG-1 (27th July). *gets misty and sentimental*

So dust off that old VHS of Stargate the movie, give it a watch, visit the comm, and join the squee!

And don't forget to bow down in praise to [profile] abyssinia4077, the genius who thought of it in the first place, and the driving force behind setting it up. KNEEL BEFORE YOUR GOD, TAU'RI!

*picks up tools, gets back to work*

Oh, before I forget - does anyone know how to chat to more than one person via IM? So that all the people involved can chat at the same time, in the same window, I mean - like a conference call (I can do the holding-two-separate-conversations-at-once thing, although it does make my head want to explode). Is it easy, or do you have to download a specific IM service? I've failed at teh internetz, and can't work it out.
